LADY SHELLY..
The last standing karamanti
Shelly-Ann Jackson, otherwise known as Lady Shelly, has been actively involved in the music industry since 1995. She started her music career doing house, techno and dance for Quebec based record label, Numuzik. She was later signed to a 3 year recording contract with Premiere Muzik International. Between 1995 and 1996 she had three number one hits, namely; “sweet party”, “get it on” and “macarena that’s me”. Lady Shelly was crowned artist of the year in the Dominica Republic in the late nineties and toured the island not once, but twice.
After releasing a much anticipated full length album (endurance), and receiving a music achievement award for going gold in Canada, Lady Shelly took a break from the industry and later re-entered focusing primarily on reggae/dancehall. She released a slew of controversial tracks which all had the media lining up for interviews. Tracks such as “welcome to canada”, which describes the stereotype of Jamaican immigrants in Canada, and “kum out”, which focuses on domestic abuse, as well as many others.
In 2009 Lady Shelly got together with producer and music director, Dave Mitchell and began working on her first dancehall mix cd, karamanti mix – volume 1. The disc, which is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2009, already has people talking. One of the first single is entitled, Bruce Golding, and it boldly addresses the ongoing debate between the Jamaican government and the dancehall community.
Lady Shelly has made it clear that she is not involved in music for the money and/or fame associated with it. But instead, is using this as a platform to address difficult personal and social issues. The upcoming mix cd, karamanti mix – volume 1 should be filled with heated discussions and will be available for free download @ www.ladyshelly.com
