Interests

  • General

LOVE, WORDS, & MUSIC (aren't they one in the same?), food, growing up, words, love, DOGS, saving the world, music, utter randomness, SQUIRRELS, pretty much anything free, did I mention music, love, & words? How about squirrels? And dogs.

  • Music

Pretty much a little of everything that's not really all that mainstream these days: gospel, r&b, soul, non-commercial hip hop, country (my one mainstream love), alternative/grunge/rock, show tunes, & Lenny Kravitz, who deserves a category unto himself. I also like to think that I enjoy exploring new music. And I LOVE making music... the organized singing of other people's music, that is. ...Although, I *do* wanna learn to play this beautiful guitar of mine.
  • Movies

I'm finally admitting that it's really not fair of me to answer this question, considering how I never seem to get around to watching movies.
  • Television

Family Guy, Law & Order SVU, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives
  • Books

The Bible (God), The Giving Tree (shel silverstein), If You Want to Walk on Water You've Got to Get Out of the Boat (John Ortberg), Tuesdays With Morrie (Mitch Albom), The BFG (Roald Dahl), Le Petit Prince [that's right - en Francais] (Antoine de Saint-Exupery), The Color of Water (James McBride), Fighting Words (Patricia Hill Collins)... Getting back to discovering more.
  • Heroes

Jesus for teaching and showing me love; my mother for teaching me some sense & how to organize; squirrels for teaching me how to dodge traffic; dogs for teaching me loyalty.

About me:

I am finally growing up. I have a love/hate relationship with the process. I'm thinking it'll be more love once I stop resisting, but I'm not really into that idea just yet. After all, Dylan did tell us, "Do not go gently into the night."

I'm an adventuresome woman, which means I like to get off the beaten path whenever possible. The more I mature, the more adventurous I get. My next big thing will be a trip to Costa Rica. My last big thing was moving up here to DC w/ no job prospect. My ongoing big thing is starting a nonprofit: Out The Boat Ministries, Inc. (http://www.OutTheBoat.org), to serve youth who are homeless, beginning with the DC and/or Baltimore metro area. I take this passion seriously:
~THERE IS ..NO REASON.. *ANYONE* SHOULD BE HOMELESS IN AMERICA - ESPECIALLY YOUNG PEOPLE!!!~

Despite my growing up and needing to at least pretend to be professional, I like to think of myself as a sort of "Neo-Hippie". I love enjoying nature and I think that trees are wonderful - everyone should hug them! I've recently gotten into bike riding, which I absolutely love! I also like to just chill with music, a snack, & my laptop to just write. Words are important; we should use them responsibly.

Hippiness aside, I *am*, indeed, a DIVA: Divinely Inspired Valued & Abled. God has chosen me to do some interesting things, so I'm learning to trust His infinite wisdom & power in all things. I was gonna take that part out, but then I thought better. God has really been dealing with me in this area & it's good to remember that His favor is on my life! (Can I get an "Amen"?)

So... I just realized that since you're already my friend if you're reading this, you probably already know all this stuff. At the same time, it might prove to be an update for some folks, so I hope you've enjoyed reading!

Who I'd like to meet:

Old friends & acquaintances; 'nuff said

Folks who are about improving the lives of our youth. We have really dropped the ball on this one and it's time we get back on point.

I'll be blunt: I need people with money and/or connections to money. Starting a nonprofit is mad expensive. Did you know that the filing fee for nonprofit status is $750? Not to mention general business costs. Plus, Out The Boat is a housing ministry. That means we need real estate. Real Estate is expensive - especially in the DMV!

I also need to hook up with people who are loyal and hard working. Also folks who aren't afraid to let me know what they really think and know what it means for members of a network to mutually encourage each other towards greatness. When one of us is weak, we're all weak!

I also need friends! (This is sad, lol!) I'm talking about folks who understand that I need to hustle and encourage my efforts to do so, but are also willing to drag me out of the house kicking & screaming so that I can have a good time once in a while. I gotta establish a whole new circle up here in the DMV - even two-and-a-half years after settling in!

so yeah...i turned Boston U down...they offered NO finanical support...something on the inside is telling me that if i do this damn application process again, re-take the GRE, and apply EARLY as hell, then someone will fully fund my education + stipend. I'm saying the supply of African American Sociologists is not THAT great so I should be able to DEMAND much! just a thought, plus I'm not interested in maxing out my federal allottment for loans...and private loans are not an option! and making the most cold turkey move of my life and moving to boston 2 b a part time student as the lady suggested isn't an option either..
