Sheela Langeberg (Sheela Sheena)

Internationally renowned and multi-award winning artist Sheela Langeberg is one of the most influential and written about Africans in Australia today, as well as one of its most prized artistic and cultural treasures.

Born, raised and educated in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, with additional studies in Scandinavia, she now makes Adelaide her home and the new center of her worldwide creative ventures.

Sheela has written, composed and produced five music albums, a book (for children), 62 stage productions for all ages, and has toured around the globe. Her vibrant, captivating performances are the reason that she's continually adding new venues to her already frequent repeat appearances, year after year.

Sheela's creativity is matched only by her inexhaustible on-stage energy, as she often tours with 2-3 productions at one time. Intertwined with her demanding performance schedule, Sheela conducts immensely popular dance/drama workshops, using her own deep and unique writing style, and movement mastery to inspire participants to birth their own unique artistic self-expression.

I believe in order for us to really help the needy children of the world, we must come up with a workable concept that is different from many of those already in place, and run by other organizations. This concept should be simple, effective and adaptable to different countries, cultures and life styles. We can also incorporate and expand upon any existing elements that are proven to work.

Of course many of these children are often in acute need of food, clothes, education and medicine, so let's start with that. Our voluntary organization will not only receive and acquire donations and goods but will organize the effective means for distributing them. And we must assure that all donations and goods go directly to the children.

Through warm, caring discussions, and playful workshops, emotional and educational needs can be met and trust developed. This makes it safer and easier for the children to express themselves and, most importantly, to be taught how to become healthily independent and able to help themselves.

It's very important to enlist the help of willing and interested older children, who themselves have been properly parented and well nurtured, to help the little ones in finding their way in life. These young people can become like older brothers and sisters to the younger ones, giving them also a sense of family.

There are other advantages to having older children teach and mentor the younger ones. For instance, children love to learn from other children in situations that are not competitive, even though they may be challenging. This is because when an older person tries to dominate, or even humiliate a younger one, it is easily detected and very counterproductive to creating trust, admiration and respect, let alone effecting learning in the younger, less experienced children.

With truly needy children often having few good role models in life, the caring presence of an older child can do so much to uplift the spirit and instill hopefulness in the younger ones. And just as we see the value in bringing the older children, the big brothers and sisters, so to speak, into the lives of the less fortunate younger ones, we also participate in mentoring these young teachers, bringing additional benefit to both their lives and our own.

By prioritizing the education of, and caring for, all children we begin to return some sanity and stability to our world on the basic level that society seems to have forgotten, i.e. the family structure. Those in need, without families, etc., now are welcomed in to our extended families, and so we all become more a part of the vast family of humanity.
