If you dont like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time. - Marian Wright Edel

In the midst of it all... u have to find time to SAVE SOULS...... Become aware of the power of social skills.... You need to decide when a one-track mind behooves you and when narrow-mindedness is an obstacle.... The surprise factor is strong. Create an immediate burst of initiative. Get a new sense of proportion. Change your frame of reference.... Distinguish between fact and fantasy. Use your ability to see through appearances.... Rather than plunging into a bottomless pit, keep your eye on self-transformation.

It is a privilege to be from such a dynamic community. A community that teaches resistance and accountability. Finally...... my work.....
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work in the South Bronx, which happens to be the POOREST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT in the NATION. I was the Education and Youth Organizer for Mothers on the MOVE.... Mothers on the Move is a community based organization initially formed to organize parents to address the failure of the public school system to adequately educate the children of the South Bronx. Our commitment has evolved to creating a powerful multi-issue organization to improve the quality of life in the community. Only through organizing and grassroots leadership development shall we begin to implement the necessary social changes needed to rebuild effective schools and communities.

The history of the Caribbean's indigenous peoples is often told from the European perspective, rather than the indigenous peoples themselves. The majority of the written records pertaining to their culture and history consist of diaries and the reports of European explorers, conquerors and their descendants who have a long history of misinterpreting the native-american cultures. Obviously, their insight was limited, as they did not share the language nor did they have a solid understanding of the indigenous peoples way of life.
Another flaw in the history of the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean is that they are frequently lumped together as one singular group. In almost every historical account, the Taino people have been interchangeably linked with the Arawak, and have been categorized together. This one inclusive category has remained intact to the present day, with little documented challenge. Few people have any concept of their linguistic and cultural diversity, nor do they know the names of the different groups.
Today, although the indigenous populations of the Caribbean have decreased substantially in numbers, their culture, in many places, is still very much alive. It is important to realize that these people are more than just a memory and that by looking at their story from all possible angles, we can put together the pieces of their history and attempt to find the truth.
Taino Borincano - DNA testing is under way at UPR - Mayaguez. Random samples have shown a considerable number of Puerto Ricans have an "Amerindian" genotype..
Boricua: n.,adj. Meaning "The Valiant People of the Sacred House". Derived from the Taino name for Puerto Rico (Boriken: Land of the Brave Noble Lord). Represents a proud sense of identity.
Taino: n., adj. "The Good Ones". Native American tribes originally inhabiting pre-Columbian Boriken (Puerto Rico), Haiti-Kiskeya (Haiti-Dominican Republic), and Cuba.
Arawak: n., adj. Language spoken by a once-predominant group of Native American tribes originally inhabiting an area that stretched from present-day Florida down through the islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles and the coastal area of South America as far as Brazil.
Filiberto and Betances on Lares flag! Ramon Emeterio Betances was the key organizer in the Grito de Lares, Setptember 23, 1868. Where the Puerto Rican people revolted against Spanish rule.

lets talk about the YOUNG LORDS MOVEMENT......In the 1960s, Young Lords emerged as a political organization in Chicago. While in prison, Jose "Cha Cha" Jimenez met Fred Hampton and other Black Panther Party members. They discussed the exploitation and oppression of Latino/as, African Americans and poor people in the United States. Cha Cha took what he learned to the Young Lords, at the time, a well-known Chicago street gang, and transformed the Young Lords into an organization committed to human rights and the liberation of Puerto Rico.
The Young Lords believed that institutions in the community should be accountable to the people that they were established to serve. Neglect and unresponsiveness led the Young Lords to take direct action to bring attention to the deplorable economic, social and political conditions existing in poor Latino/a communities across the United States.
By 1976, the Young Lords Party had disintegrated as a result of government and police repression and political infighting. The organization ceased to exist, but the principles it stood for remain.
