LALOC (Los Angeles Local Organizing Committee)'s Blurbs |
About me:
What is LALOC? A diverse collective of young progressive individuals who are affiliated with various
local community based organizations and national youth civic engagement organizations.
Our Mission: To build power for our peers so we can collectively become the decision makers on those
issues that affect the communities we serve.
Who are Our Members? Members of LALOC are young progressive art, hip-hop, community and political
organizers, activists and strategists located in the southern California area who volunteer their time, skills and
resources to advance the goals of the group.
Our Goals: LALOC aims to bring young progressive artists, organizers, activists, researchers, and policy
makers together across issues, geography, class, race and gender with a common agenda of building power. LALOC works to
build a substantial and sustainable base that will translate into a powerful youth voting bloc.
Our Beliefs: LALOC believes that political participation is a tool that must be used to address the
problems within the communities we serve and build power. No political party or solely voting will solve the issues.
Yet, by creating a substantial and sustainable base to hold ourselves and law makers accountable, we empower ourselves
and our communities.
What We Offer:
- The ability for non-profit organizations to indirectly engage in electoral politics
- A grapevine for current issue campaigns
- Organizational development training
- Youth constituency networking at the local and national level
- Power building in the public arena and leadership development training
- An unrestricted legal structure
- Youth constituency analysis
- Media access
Ongoing Trainings:
- Power Building
- Leadership Development
- Alliance Building
- Election Protection
- Non-profit Legal Compliance
Our History: LALOC was unofficially founded in July 2003, and became official in November 2003, by
hip-hop activists and organizers L.A. Nevins and Rob “biko” Baker, and co-founder of the League of Pissed-Off Voters
(the League), Kyle Stewart. LALOC was originally formed as a local affiliate partnership between the League and the
National Hip-Hop Political Convention to organize a local progressive youth/hip-hop voter bloc. Currently, LALOC
operates as an independent entity and has no formal affiliate or legal status. LALOC’s current lead facilitator is
Human Rights advocate and emcee, Lamar Glover.
