MALA VITA BIOGRAPHY(EN)
Powerful melodies from the Balkans, explosive rhythms from Latin America and lyrics straight from the dark Neapolitan alleys, welcome to the world of Mala Vita! These gypsies from the 21st century know how to energetically summarize the world in a nutshell. A new album, a collaboration with Gambeat from Radio Bemba, an Essent Award, nobody can stop this band! The secret of this success? Bring six musicians together with different nationalities and backgrounds, let them blend and the global sounds of Mala Vita will blow out of your speakers.
The roots of front man Mickael lay in the sunny and beautiful country of Italy. That’s why most of the lyrics are sung in Italian. The other band members from Bosnia, Serbia and The Netherlands complete the band’s international personality. Mala Vita also sings in Spanish, English, Bosnian and French. Or call it ‘Itañol’, ‘Franglais’ or ‘Bosniano’, because the idiom of the Malavitosi is just as infinite as their music.
The strong Balkan sounds are no coincidence. Accordion player Emil and drummer Garo are both from the torn country of Bosnia. So they know how to unite Europe’s far east and west. The band’s songs are full of themes like pain, love and betrayal. But don’t expect to be having a melancholic night with Mala Vita, because they will bring you a show of danceable polkapunk, crushing ska and pounding reggae.
In the spring of 2007 the band released their first studio album, Disorganizzata. For this album they worked closely together with producer Gambeat from the world famous band Radio Bemba Sound System.Disorganizzata has been partially recorded in The Netherlands and Barcelona and mixed in Barcelona, the centre of the vivid mestizo-scene.
The band developed itself in an incredible speed since it’s start in 2001. They have played on uncountable stages of venues and festivals throughout Europe. The highlights: two times Lowlands, Noorderslag, Polé Polé at the Gentse Feesten, The International Film Festival in Zagreb and the recording of their live album Mani Fiesta in Het Paard van Troje in The Hague. In 2005 the band won a prestigious Essent Award.

Las raíces del frontman Mickael se encuentran el país soleado y hermoso de Italia. Ése es porqué la mayoría de las letras están en italiano. Los otros miembros de la banda son de Bosnia, de Serbia y de los Países Bajos y determinan la personalidad internacional de la banda.
Mala Vita además canta en español, inglés, bosníaco y francés. O llámelo Itañol, Franglais o Bosniano, porque el idioma del los Malavitosi es tan infinito, como su música. Las canciones de la banda están llenas de temas como dolor, injusticia, guerra, la traición, esperanza y amor. Pero no espere tener una noche melancolica con Mala Vita, porque te traerán una mezcla bailable de polkapunk, ska, latin y reggae.
En la primavera de 2007 la banda lanza su primer álbum de estudio, Disorganizzata. Para este álbum trabajaron junto con el productor Gambeat del Radio Bemba Sound System. Disorganizzata se ha grabado parcialmente en los Países Bajos y Barcelona y se ha mezclado en Barcelona, el centro de la música mestiza. Gambeat no sólo ha producido el álbum sino también ha participado en el proceso de escribir los temas.
La banda se desarrolló con una velocidad increíble desde su fundación en 2001. Han tocado en enscenarios numerosos de salas y festivales a través de Europa. Los toques de luz: dos veces el Lowlands Festival, el main stage del Exit Festival en Novi Sad, Serbia, Noorderslag, Polé Polé, el festival internacional de la película en Zagreb y la grabación de su disco en vivo Mani Fiesta. En 2005 la banda ganó un premio prestigioso, el Essent Award.

Opzwepende melodieën uit de Balkan, explosieve ritmes uit Latijns-Amerika en teksten die rechtstreeks afkomstig zijn uit de donkere stegen van Napels, welcome to the world of Mala Vita! Deze zigeuners van de 21e eeuw weten op energieke wijze de wereld muzikaal in een notendop samen te vatten.
In het voorjaar van 2009 brengt één van Europa's meest toonaangevende mestizobands een gloednieuw album uit: En Exilio, Spaans voor 'in ballingschap'. De leden van Mala Vita hebben hun wortels liggen in verschillende Europese landen en de meesten hebben hun huis en haard moeten verlaten vanwege de verwoestende oorlog in ex-Joegoslavië. De desillusie en het gevoel van ontheemding van veel migranten is een belangrijk actueel thema en in het bijzonder voor deze band.
Via ijzersterke songs doordrongen van hoop, protest en melancholie werpen de leden van Mala Vita een kritische en originele blik op de globaliserende wereld.
Ook de Marokkaanse rapper Salah Edin (bekend van Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie) herkende zich in de ideeën en gevoelens over verbanning en is daarom te horen in het nummer ‘Ritmo di Protesta’ (Ritme van Protest), het openingsnummer van En Exilio.
En Exilio, de opvolger van het in 2007 verschenen Disorganizzata (geproduceerd door Gambeat, bassist in Manu Chao's band Radio Bemba), is een energieke cross-over van balkanpunk, latin, reggae, rock en hiphop.
Ditmaal namen Mickael Franci (zang), Emil Kunto (accordeon) en Davor Lazić (gitaar) de productie voor eigen rekening in samenwerking met Zorko Opačić, gitarist in de bekende Kroatische band FIT en eigenaar van de Zox Studio in Amsterdam. De bekende Belgische producer Werner Pensaert (van o.a. Zita Swoon en K..s Choice) heeft het album gemixt.
De roots van Frontman Mickael liggen in het zonnige Italië. De andere bandleden komen onder meer uit Bosnië, Servië en Kroatië, en daarmee is het internationale karakter van Mala Vita compleet. Nationaliteiten en achtergronden die nog niet zo lang geleden in een hevige oorlog waren verwikkeld komen samen in deze band, die zich laat gelden als een voorbeeld voor een nieuwe Europese generatie.
Mala Vita zingt in het Italiaans, Servo-Kroatisch, Engels, Spaans en Frans. Of noem het 'Itañol', 'Franglais' en 'Bosniano', want de tongval van de Malavitosi is even grenzeloos als hun muziek.
Sinds de oprichting in 2002 heeft Mala Vita zich in een duizelingwekkend tempo ontwikkeld. De band heeft vele podia in diverse binnen- en buitenlandse zalen en festivals beklommen. Met als hoogtepunten: driemaal Lowlands, een grote tour door Mexico, main stage Exit Festival in Novi Sad, Servië, tweemaal Noorderslag, Polé Polé op de Gentse Feesten, het Internationaal Film Festival in Zagreb. Daarnaast heeft de band verschillende malen getourd door Europa, in met name de Balkan, Frankrijk, Spanje, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland en Duitsland. Ook won de band in 2005 een Essent Award.
De sound van Mala Vita laat zich niet gemakkelijk in één hokje duwen en dat is nou juist de kracht van deze mondiale muzieksensatie.

Continued Aggression Leads to Mapuche Declaration of War Continued aggressions of the Chilean state has led the Arauco Malleco Coordinator of Mapuche Communities in Conflict (CAM), a radical indigenous Mapuche organization, to formally renounce their Chilean citizenship and declared war on the government. The declaration was issued on Oct. 20, the same day that two trucks belonging to the El Bosque forestry corporation were intercepted by CAM and set on fire in the province of Malleco. As reported by the Latin American Herald Tribune, “the attacks, which began at 1:10 a.m., came hours after five Mapuches were formally indicted under a Pinochet-era anti-terrorism law for similar assaults carried out Oct. 11 near the city of Victoria.” The declaration, much more than a symbolic gesture, comes at a time of increasing violence against Mapuche children and youths, particularly over the past three months, when Mapuche communities began reclaiming illegally occupied lands in the region of Araucania. For instance, according to the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), on Oct. 16 “a large group of police, for as yet unknown reasons, began to fire pellets and tear gas canisters” in a school in Temucuicui, Araucania. “Several children suffered pellet wounds and had trouble breathing,” Hundreds of Mapuche and non-Mapuche activists protested the attack on Oct. 23—including several children, who carried the empty canisters with them as the marched in Temuco, Araucania’s capital.
