Catcher in the Rye describes the threshold struggle between Holden as an idealistic East-Coast sixteen year-old. But the story is told in retrospect by the now, seventeen year old patient of a California Mental Institution. According to Holden, it was phoniness that finally drove him crazy. IN the end it is not entirely clear to the reader whether the destructive element was the phoniness of the grownup world or his own.
