Le groupe Franco-malien Lanaya réuni depuis l’été 2005 des musiciens de la région de Valence, et deux griots (un musicien et une chanteuse) de la ville de Kita au Mali. Cette formation affirme par son travail de création et d’arrangement un métissage musical novateur.L’orientation du groupe est de retrouver l’esprit des anciens orchestres africains en y intégrant une couleur et une écriture « jazz », tout en laissant une large place à l’improvisation.
Depuis 2006, 4 tournées en France et une tournée au mali, ont permis à Lanaya d'affirmer le son du groupe, et de roder un spectacle remportant à chaque prestation un vif succès. Lanaya représente pour tous ces musiciens une aventure musicale et humaine d’une grande richesse et les motivations à développer ce projet interculturel sont très fortes dans nos deux pays.
The french-malian band Lanaya includes a number of jazz musicians from the Valence (France) region. Most of them come from the "Jazz Action Valence" school, and two Malians (a percussionist and a singer) from the city of Kita, in Mali.
The original compositions are an innovative musical style, which tries to reunite the spirit of old african orchestras, together with a clear jazz influence, that allows an important space for improvisation.
At the present time, the band allows 8 musicians : a rythm section drum-bass-guitar, the africans elements : singing and djembe, and a brass section (sax-trumpet-french horn), that adds another specificity to the whole.
Most of the musicians (french and malians) are professionals and work on their own individual projects in parallel with this one. For all these people Lanaya represents a rich musical heritage and spirit of adventure. The motivation to develop this cross-cultural project is very strong in both countries.
The Perdriau Brothers first made contact, in 2000, with a family of traditional malian musicians, known locally as "Griots", in Kita, Mali.
Following a serie of exchanges, more musicians were invited to join the musical sessions and, slowly but surely, the idea to form a band evolved naturally. Having obtained the grant "Défi Jeune", as well as other financial support from various associations, the birth of Lanaya was made possible in July 2005.
In January 2006, all the musicians gathered again in Kita for a month's workshop ; this conclued with "Mandé Trans", some creative compositions of elements from both musical traditions. This session was recorded in a studio in Bamako.
During the summer of 2006, Lanaya reunited for two workshops and a sucession of well-received shows in the Rhône-Alpes region.
In 2007, two other tours were organised in France from the 14th April-14th May and 20th June-22nd July. The band recorded a live session during the second tour.
In January 2008, the group travelled to Mali for a ten-concert tour. This journey helped Lanaya to establish solid foundations between the two continents, and strengthen the french-malian relationships, which is the heart of the project.
Summer 2008 : the group went back on the French roads for a new tour of eleven shows. Following it, Lanaya recorded "Nanfulé". This album is the result of 3 years of highly creative work amongst the musicians.
