Who I'd like to meet:
Bobby Sands... "I have always taken a lesson from something that was told me by a sound man, that is, that everyone, Republican or otherwise, has his own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small, no one is too old or too young to do something. There is that much to be done that no select or small portion of people can do, only the greater mass of the Irish nation will ensure the achievement of the Socialist Republic, and that can only be done by hard work and sacrifice." - Bobby Sands. Solidarity Rally with Aboriginal Australia

No to Howard's Land Grab!

The Auckland branch of Socialist Worker has called for all anti racist and trade union groups to join with them at a protest outside the Australian Consulate this Monday July 2nd at 4.30pm, to oppose John Howard's invasion of Aboriginal lands in the Northern Territories and elsewhere.

"Forced blanket medical testing, the occupation of tribal lands by the trigger happy Australian Army and a racist Police force guilty of the murder of dozens of Black Australians in custody, and a draconian state attack on welfare and human rights is a declaration of war by Johnnie Howard on the Aboriginal people" said organiser Joe Carolan.

"We saw how little Johnnie cynically used the children of the Tampa to win an election before. Now it is Black Australian kids who are being "thrown overboard" by their families! Will Johnnie be sending the army into Sydney's leafy suburbs of North Shore if abuse was ever reported there?"

"The trade union movement in Aotearoa has a proud record of uniting Pakeha, Maori and immigrant workers to fight for their rights. Now its time for us to stand with our brothers and sisters in Black Australia. In particular, we appeal to Maori workers and community groups to rally with us, and stand up against the racism of this odious little man."

"I absolutely agree that this a cynical attack on Australian Aboriginals. I support protest from New Zealand Unions against John Howard on this issue. If there are these problems to address then let the Aboriginals themselves resolve them through adequate support and funding from the Australian government - instead of imposing a police state style attack on people who

Freedom, media and revolution in Venezuela

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela faces huge attacks on his plans for a Socialism of the 21st Century, from both the wealthy establishment and media elites within the country, and the US government and their allies without. The non renewal of the broadcast license to the RCTV television station, which supported the failed right wing coup attempt against Chavez in 2002, has seen a renewed offensive by the countrys upper classes- he stands accused of being a dictator, despite winning election after election. His new party, the United Socialist Party, has just registered its five millionth member.

Coral Wynter, a journalist for the Green Left magazine, lived in Caracas, Venezuela for the last year. She is just back and speaking tonight about freedom, the media and revolution in Venezuela, at the Latin American Centre, 37 Selwyn Street, Onehunga, at 7.30pm tonight (Thurs June 7th).

Mercury Energy- Murder Energy!
www.unityaotearoa.blogspot.com

Trade unionists and community activists from South Auckland will join forces at an angry picket at the headquarters of Mercury Energy, 602 Great South Road in Green Lane, today Thurs 31 May at 4pm, to protest the death of Folole Muliaga.

Folole died after her power was disconnected from her house by a contractor employed by Mercury Energy, leaving her family to grieve in the dark. Her family had warned and pleaded with the company beforehand that her life support required electricity. She was $170 behind her bill.

Protest organiser Joe Carolan-
"Yet again we see a so-called State Owned Enterprise put profit before people in New Zealand. Mercury Energy should be renamed Murder Energy- they are corporate bully boys who prey on the weak, old and vulnerable of South Auckland, and are no better than the corrupt money lenders who plague our communities. They rely on the fact that people feel alone and isolated- thats why we want to give them a dose of people power tomorrow they will never forget.

Trade unions like my own Solidarity Union will join community activists at Murder Energy Headquarters today, 602 Great South Rd, Greenlane. We will be calling for the sacking of Murder Energys CEOs and their blood soaked moneymen, and for proper democratic community control over the decision making to ensure that this tragedy that Folole and her family suffered is never, ever repeated. We call on the people of Auckland who are angry about this to come join us and say People Before Profit- Murder Energy- Never Again!"
