La Onda Bajita is a bilingual, Xicano-Latino Indigenous collective. For over 25 years, we have held a strong, steadfast commitment to give voice to Spanish-speaking and native communities. We use the power of words as a tool for change, truthfully documenting the injustices done to our peoples and lands, in order to involve our listeners in our quest for social and environmental justice. We use the power of the radio waves to plant the seeds of strength, knowledge, love, peace, wisdom and unity within the peoples of the land.
As a “Voice for the voiceless,” we speak out against the disenfranchisement of indigenous peoples, communities of color, the undocumented, the immigrant community, the working class poor, women, children, elders and especially the natural environment. We are the underlying echo of those that believed in change and fought before us, so that we can do the same for the generations that exist and the generations that follow. We strive to move our “La Onda Familia” onto higher levels of awareness about the interconnections and fragility of all life, thereby sending out a message of hope for the coming generations. Using a tapestry of voices, music, soundscapes and clear, hard words, we raise collective consciousness towards a more harmonious global existence. At the same time, we also endeavor to soothe the pain of lonely and isolated individuals such as those in prisons and in hospitals. We move to ease the distress of the many lost souls in Aztlan.
Historically, mainstream media outlets have discouraged Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities of color from participation in its political, social and economic decision-making processes and has ignored different perspectives, particularly those of the non-English-speaking peoples who live, work in and contribute to the well-being of the community at large. La Onda Bajita is dedicated to change the stranglehold monopoly of mass media by the dominant society and its special interest groups. Through innovative and creative radio programming, it is the intent of La Onda Bajita to enlighten and empower those disenfranchised communities to rise up and participate as equal members of society.
We, the members of La Onda Bajita, continually try to reflect our unique worldview and reality to our audience. Empowering and engaging them, we can be the voice that incites the listeners to further personal growth, in a spirit of peace, dignity and solidarity, for the healing of our families and nations, and for the good of the hemisphere and the entire planet.
La Onda Bajita: 25 years in the struggle for social, economic and environmental
justice
La onda bajita is being prohibited to have their archives in public access due to FCC policy implementation at kpfa a year ago that only applies to music programs, and has only been getting two archives for fourteen days on kpfa.org even though they are a Arts and Cultural affairs program. While multiple archives of all other Arts programs are still made public, and all their archives are still saved, la onda bajita has been kept from the public.
While I have been looking for La onda bajita's old shows they all seem to have disappeared, but I found out that is not the case. They are not being made public since last year due to a FCC hearing that put limitations on all programming at kpfa.org since all programs play music for more than 30 seconds. However, all programming archives do not have this limitation till this day, even though it has been a year since the ruling. Even though the FCC clearly states these limitations are for all programs on KPFA, some how la onda bajita was targeted as a music program and had the removal of their archives without notification. As I the Co producer of the program tried to make contact with management, I got the run around.
