EPPIE award As you can guess, I'm always in the middle of writing something. I'm hoping Pit-Stop does well enough to justify publishing a second book, which I'm already hard at work on. It'll be called THE HOLLOWS, and it's about a haunted apartment complex.

THE NEW STAR TREK WAS INCREDIBLE. AND I DUG THE HECK OUT OF WOLVERINE, MAYBE BECAUSE IT WAS SO CHEESY IN THAT STALLONE-80'S ERA-ACTION MOVIE KINDA WAY. ON THE FLIP SIDE, YOU COULDN'T PAY ME TO WATCH TRANSFORMERS 2.
  • Television

LOST just keeps getting better and better. I don't know how they do it, but they make every other drama out there look like a waste of time. I think Richard Alpert's got four toes, Smokey the Monster is a byproduct of time travel, and everyone who dies gets their souls trapped on the island...I also think about a half a billion other things about Lost that regularly change. I'm sure I can connect Lost to Osama Bin Laden and the Lincoln Assassination if I try real hard. Oh, my head hurts.

About me:

The Hollows Cover
Ben Larken introduced readers to the roadside diner from hell in the Eppie Award-winning Pit-Stop. Now he invites you to enter a secluded apartment complex with a bloodcurdling history waiting to be unearthed in The Hollows.

Former detective David Alders is forced to downsize to an apartment after a decade of searching for his missing wife. To avoid staggering debt he and his daughter Melanie move into Whispering Hollows, a complex filled with mostly older residents--like the charmingly befuddled Eldon Mickles. The property manager Charlie also welcomes them into the Hollows family in his down-home Southern way. But their first night inside their new lodging gives Melanie the fright of her life when a burnt corpse crawls into her bed. And events only get stranger as David finds himself reliving the same day twice! Suddenly time travel is an all-too-real tool at David’s disposal, one he can use to finally return to the wife who disappeared. The ability to time travel does not come without rules. Danger and deadly consequences await anyone bold enough to break them. As David wades cautiously into the past shadowy figures loom in the background, watching events unfold and waiting for their moment to strike. When they do David will know the one awful truth of his existence:

He didn’t choose the Hollows. The Hollows chose him…

Welcome to The Hollows, a time-bending, heart-stopping love story from the man called, “One of the best upcoming writers I have had the pleasure of reading in a long time. Right up there with King, Barker and Straub.”

--John Parker, The Southern Horror Writers Association

LARKEN COLLAGE

Pit-Stop Book Cover
PIT-STOP is my first novel, and it's for anyone who likes fast-paced thrillers. Here's the nutshell version:

LAST CHANCE AT REDEMPTION FOR THE NEXT MILLION YEARS…

Welcome to the Pit-Stop Grill, a roadside attraction along Arizona’s Route 66 where travelers kick up their feet while sipping a nice cup of joe. It’s a cool oasis in an unforgiving desert landscape. It’s also the last stop on the road to Hell.

Ten people find themselves in the eerie diner, unable to get out or remember how they arrived. All they know is what their cryptic waitress Holly tells them: a bus is coming. It will take them the rest of the way, to a destination of unspeakable horrors.

Led by Officer Scott Alders, the group of strangers unite with a common goal—escape. Each of them holds dark secrets, but personal demons are no match for the wraithlike tormentor that arrives bearing the nametag RAMSEY.

Driving an oily black bus with ghostly headlights and exhaust that smells of brimstone, the bus driver wastes no time picking them off one by one. As their number dwindles and the terror mounts Scott Alders realizes it will take more than a police-issued sidearm to stop the evil that tracks them. But is the power in their battered spirits enough to combat a crimson-eyed monster with a schedule to keep?

One thing is clear: you’ll think twice before making your next Pit-Stop. Dorothy Rising ***The first issues of DOROTHY RISING are out. It's a twisted tale of a twister gone horribly wrong. THE HOLLOWS By Ben Larken
David is at a dead end after ten maddening years searching for his vanished wife. With mounting bills and a daughter on the verge of college, he makes the only logical choice: sell the family home, get back to work, and take a cheap apartment. His daughter, Melanie, is secretly thrilled about the change hoping it means a fresh start for their withering family. But The Hollows has other plans… As a new community welcomes the Alders into its midst, elusive figures watch from the periphery, waiting for their moment. On the first night, a grotesque, burnt man seizes Melanie in her bed, spewing insane ramblings before disappearing into the darkness. She struggles to convince her father what happened was real, but David has his own problems. Like the fact that he has just woke up in the wrong day.

Welcome to a tour through the dark underbelly of the last half-century where invisible hands take you by force to the demons of your past. Where you can find terror, time travel, and murder—all for one low monthly rent. Welcome to… THE HOLLOWS...Pray that the lease agreement expires before you do.

We are really excited about this story. I couldn't wait to read it. Derek is only has 3 pages to go before he will be finished with issue 2. John sent us issue 3 and we can't wait to read it. We are trying to wait till this issue is finished. I love your story. I am so glad you liked the artwork. Derek doesn't feel like he is worthy enough to do it.
