Who I'd like to meet:
SADD is an organization that focuses on creating healthier lifestyles for everyone with an emphasis on the 15-21 year old age group. Each community can shape SADD to meet its needs. SADD strictly supports the NO USE message of using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
When S.A.D.D was created in 1981, the letters stood for Students Against Driving Drunk. In 1997 the name changed to Students Against Destructive Decisions in response to the overwhelming request from individual chapters across the United States. Our students are faced with many destructive issues and the name change reflects the problems that our youth are confronted with in today’s world.
SADD is a national organization by and for young people. We have chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges across the United States and in several other countries. This means that by starting a chapter in your school, you are joining with hundreds of thousands of other young people to stand up for positive decision-making and safe and healthy lives.
As a SADD chapter, you are also taking on challenges and committing to some hard work. While SADD has lots of supporters and has had many successes over the years, there is still much to do. Traffic crashes are still the number one killer of teens, and one third of those crashes are alcohol related. Just after traffic crashes as a cause of death for teens comes violence and just after that, teen suicide. These statistics are testaments to the complex, often cruel world that often young people inhabit.
SADD members know it’s a tough world. But you have decided to do something about it. You have decided that there is power in numbers and that by joining together and working hard every day, you can make a difference.
I encourage you to continue the work that only young people can do--reach out to your friends and acquaintances, inform them, support them and work together with them to make the world a little safer for all of you. Your teachers and parents and SADD state coordinators and national staff are right behind you. On all their behalf, I thank you and I applaud you.
