Hasta hace algunos años, la cueca chilena estuvo ligada sólo a un público reducido, en su mayoría adultos, ya que la cueca tradicional no era atractiva para los jóvenes.
A fines de la década de los 90's, gracias a la reaparición del grupo Los Chileneros y la masificación de sus antiguas producciones, la juventud comenzó a sentirse atraída por este particular estilo de interpretar la cueca, formándose así, variados grupos masculinos de jóvenes, que comenzaron a difundir poco a poco este nuevo e interesante estilo, denominado "cueca urbana".
A partir de lo mencionado anteriormente, han aparecido innumerables seguidores de la cueca urbana formándose agrupaciones a lo largo de todo Chile, que han creado sus propios clubes y campeonatos de cueca.
Dentro de este marco el destacado músico Ignacio Hernández crea el grupo Las Capitalinas, revelación en este ambiente ya que, además de su particular y atractivo estilo, se posicionaron como el grupo femenino pionero en este género, convirtiéndose en uno de los más emblemáticos de este movimiento.
