The voice and emotion of Jeff Buckley. The creative risk-taking of Radiohead. The tight, groove-based musicianship of The Stone Roses. These strains have come together in Detroit’s most original new band—Last Tourist. Like all great rock bands, Last Tourist have arrived fully formed. What’s more, they sound like nothing else being produced in their hometown. If Detroit has become synonymous with “Garage Rock” in your mind, Last Tourist will confound all of your expectations. Their sound is instinctual: the melodies are hauntingly familiar, yet remain refreshing and catchy. The rhythms they create are primal and serve as the perfect accompaniment to the guitar and voice. Five old friends comprise Last Tourist’s line up: Matt Peabody (lead vocals/guitar/piano), Mark Julien (vocals/guitar), Chris Frey (vocals/guitar), Paul Serilla (bass) and Eric Damore (drums). The band’s sound is the result of a shared musical sensibility and history. Matt, Mark, Chris, Paul, and Eric have played together in groups since they first picked up their respective instruments, but never with such undeniable results. "Portrait Of A Marathon" is the first documented evidence of this. Recorded in a basement for virtually nothing by the band itself, the no-frills production brings out the songwriting craft and musical talent of these five friends. Besides "Hold The Fort"—a syncopated, dream-like rocker, the LP also features a hook-laden thriller—“Smolder”, and a stunning synthesis of indie and country influences—“Blonde Adonis”. The boys of Last Tourist are currently looking to book shows and expand their fan base the Detroit area. As always, their overarching goal is simple: to be the best band anywhere.
