Overview:
The Last Waltz Ensemble is a musical group that progressively plays the music of Bob Dylan and The Band. The group bolsters a play list of over 70 Bob Dylan, The Band, and related tunes covering all eras of the artists. From The Hawks to the Basement Tapes to The Last Waltz and beyond, the group plays traditional and original arrangements in an improvisational jamband format, never playing the same set list twice. Using vintage equipment and borrowed arrangements, the ensemble produces sounds to take the listeners on a musical ride through some of the most fit, finished, and timeless music in history. The shows are filled with the hits and the deep cuts. They are also known for special guest performances incorporating friends from regional and national acts.
Origination:
In the fall of 2004, the Marietta based original Americana band Houndog decided to do a one time concert celebration, a tribute to the music from the Martian Scorsese movie, “The Last Waltz”. Houndog, made up of Mark Kramer, lead Vocals and acoustic guitar; Kris Gloer, vocals and lead guitar; Eric Reed, bass and vocals, and Shawn Stickney on Drums, was a regular band on the Atlanta music scene playing a house gig on Wednesday and Friday nights at Crystal’s bar on the Marietta Square, as well as one night stands all over at the city hotspots The Brandy House, Fuzzy’s Place and Smith’s Olde Bar.
Led into the project by Kris Gloer the group contacted Brian Cole, the talent buyer for the venerable Fuzzy’s Place, to arrange a venue for the show. The dates decided on were Thanksgiving weekend November 2004, keeping with the spirit of the final concert of The Band. After setting the dates and venue the group decided to have some of their friends from the burgeoning Atlanta music scene to perform special guest features. Two or three songs per guest highlighting their abilities with songs suited for their style and influences. Guests from that first memorable weekend included Tommy Talton, founding member of Cowboy and former lead guitarist for The Gregg Allman Band, the late blues prodigy Sean Costello, and Rev. Jeff Mosier of Blueground Undergrass.
The show was a runaway sell out, drawing more people than could fit in the 30+ year old establishment. And the performances were as timeless as the music played. After the weekend was over Houndog went back to a regular schedule of original music, but decided to make the show an annual Thanksgiving weekend event. The following year the show relocated to its current home, Smith’s Olde Bar in midtown Atlanta.
The 2005 edition included guest performances by Kevin Harris, Terence Higgins and Efrem Towns from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rick Richards from The Georgia Satellites and Mimi Holland Thomas. The show was once again a huge success.
In the spring of 2006 the group decided to do a test marketing of the show, now called The Last Waltz Ensemble, in five cities across the Southeastern United States. After sellouts in Charleston SC, Birmingham AL, and Athens GA the group was picked up by
Intrepid Artists International of Charlotte, NC and began touring the US performing over 70 shows a year. Over the last three years the group has played more than 200 shows, performing in clubs, theaters, community concert series, and festivals all while continuing in the tradition of having guest artists whenever available.
Guests have included: Susan Tedeschi, Ted Pecchio, Oliver Wood, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Ret., Sean Costello, Rev. Jeff Mosier, Efrem “ET” Towns, Kevin Harris, Mike “Swami” Schumann, Caroline Aiken, Ike Stubblefield, Bobby Houck, Brock Butler, Charlie Starr, Rick Richards, Zach Deputy, CR Gruver, and Justin Brogdon just to name a few.
The group released its first record in January 2008. A live CD entitled “Live at The Visulite Theater”, recorded live in Charlotte, NC. Tracks on the disc include “King Harvest”, “Time To Kill”, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, “Like a Rolling Stone”, “It Makes No Difference”, and Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere”. The group is currently working on an upcoming studio release with Atlanta musician and producer Oliver Wood.
