Ever read a recording studio magazine review that raves about the Audio Quality of the High End device being covered? Most reviews seem to dance around the issue. Articles will often tell you about all the bells and whistles, but never touch upon the most important aspect of all: Audio Quality. Much of pro audio equipment uses poor quality analog signal chain components. In the world of Converters, there is a pervasive myth that the’ Converter Quality’ matters the most, and that the ‘Analog Stages’ are not important.
In MOTU's case, the use of NJM4580 and NJM2115 opamps is one of the biggest liabilities to sound quality & we’ve replaced the entire analog section with much higher quality components, drastically reducing THD and improving bandwidth.
AKM converters perform as they were designed to. The Soundstage is wider and Vocal & Instrument placement are more realistic.

A second weak spot in a lot of ‘High End Gear’ is definitely the ‘Clocking System’. Many are based around Texas Instruments TLC2933, which is a VCO and PLL all in one. Jitter is high and datasheet claims of 120 Picoseconds are much higher than that because of power supply noise.
The Micro Clock mk2 is simple and probably even boring looking by most standards. It’s housed in a rugged yet basic 3 inch by 4 inch chassis that provides optimum RF shielding. It has no lights, frequency display, or any of the usual eye candy because those create unwanted noise and affect signal. A modest ‘Black Box,’ it does its job incredibly well.
The Micro Clock mk2 is compatible with all modern digital devices that have 75 ohm BNC word clock input.
Sampling rates: six selectable rates, 44.1 kHz-192 kHz
Jitter: maximum 1 pico second of intrinsic jitter, less than 10 picoseconds of accumulated jitter measured using a delta sigma averaging method.
