Who I'd like to meet:

Mp3: Late Night Sounds May Mix '06

Tracklisting:

1. Noonday Underground - “London” (Mp3 courtesy of Bar None Records)

This London-based group list The Beatles and Stax-soul as two of their primary influences. Noonday Underground lifted their named from a Tom Wolfe essay about 1960s mods dancing on their lunch break in a London club called the Scene. This track is off their 2001 album Self Assembly.

2. John Egdell - “He Didn’t Want You To Go”

John Egdell is from Newcastle, England. His songs are like small pictures of life, some just touching on a minute long. John describes his songs as "diary entries and unsent letters". He has put out six self released demo collections to date, this song however, is from John's debut album Your Big Day. Recommended for fans of: The Lucksmiths or Teenage Fanclub. Hear more from John Egdell's MySpace.

3. Cineplexx - "Tarde" (Get the Mp3 from Cineplexx MySpace)

Cineplexx (a.k.a. Sebastian Litmanovich) is an electronic pop artist from Buenos Aires, this track is from the album Pequenos Accidentes Domesticos.

4. Method Actors - "Do The Method" (Mp3 courtesy of Little Hits)

Little Hits is a site that hosts rarities in hopes to spark an interest, eventually leading to legitimate re-issue of the works of an artist represented, or wider recognition of already available releases. This song is coverted from vinyl. The Method Actors were a duo out of Athens, GA who were into the funkier, no-wave side of post-punk.

5. Fujiya & Miyagi - "Sucking Punch"

Fujiya & Miyagi were a duo formed in Brighton UK, releasing their first album Electro Karaoke in 2002. They became a quartet for awhile and have now been whittled down to a three piece. They claim they are trying their best, and that they may or may not get a drummer. This song is one of their funkier numbers off their album Transparent Things. Hear more from Fujiya & Miyaki's MySpace.

6. Jetpack UK - "Destroy Your Hideout"

Jetpack UK aren't from the UK at all...their from Nashville TN. They play Brit-pop flavored rock with energetic hooks and infectious melodies. Hear more from Jetpack UK's MySpace.

7. David Garza - "Jezebel Grin"

David (that's Dah-veed) Garza is one of my favorite singer-songwriter's. One time I caught him perform and I was chatting with him beforehand, he asked what I wanted to hear so I ran off about a dozen or so songs I wouldn't mind hearing...he played them all. This song from David Garza's box set A Strange Mess of Flowers. This boxed set is fillled with outtakes and rarities, if you're not familiar with his work I would start with one of his previous albums (4-Track Manifesto, This Euphoria, or Overdub) before picking this one up. I could go on forever, but I won't, read more about David from his old Atlantic Records page. Hear some rarities from David Garza's MySpace

8. Man Man - "I'd Rather Go Blind" (Get the Mp3 from Man Man's MySpace)

Yes, that's the Etta James classic they're covering. This Philly act have been compared to Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, and Frank Zappa. They've also been lauded for their notorious live shows. They recorded this song just for the hell of it, if you haven't picked up they're album Six Demon Bag I suggest you do so.

9. The Notwist - "Pilot"

This band originally formed near Munich as a hardcore punk band, gradually they began to embrace a fusion of classic '80s indie-pop songwriting and electronic backings. This song is from one of the best (and overlooked) albums of 2003 (Neon Golden). Fans of Radiohead or Erlend Oye might enjoy this one. Hear more from The Notwist's MySpace.

10. The Horrors - "Full Moon"

This is an organ heavy garage rock number from a much hyped London quartet. This demo is their catchiest song to date. Hear more from The Horrors MySpace.

Mp3: "Late Night Sounds April Mix '06"

Tracklisting:

1. Baby Dayliner - "Go On Baby"

I don't know a whole lot about Baby Dayliner (aka Ethan Marunas), I know he's from New York, this song is off the album Critics Pass Away, and it reminds me of some of the synth pop I used to listen to as a teen. Hear more from Baby Dayliner's MySpace.

2. Danielson - "Trumpet" (Mp3 courtesy of Secretly Canadian Records)

Well, this song already made it's way around the music blogs, but I had already thrown it in this mix, so give it a listen again. This track from Danielson's forthcoming album...hear more from Danielson's MySpace.

3. Shugo Tokumaru - "Light Chair"

Shugo Tokumaru makes melodic lo-fi folk music, in Japanese. This song is from the 2004 album Night Piece. Fans of Iron & Wine might enjoy this one. You can hear this track and others from Shugo Tokumaru's MySpace.

4. Peggy Honeywell - "Faint"

This track is from Peggy Honeywell's 2005 album Faint Humms. She has drawn comparisons to Cowboy Junkies or Mazzy Star. Listen to samples here.

5. Kelley Polar - "Tyurangalila"

This song is from Kelley Polar's 2005 album Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens. It was easily one of my favorite albums of 2005. I love the hook towards the end, where Polar repeats the verse "I can't til your back here in the dark with me". Fans of Erlend Oye might want to pick this one up. Hear this song and others from Kelley Polar's MySpace.

6. Los Bunkers - "Te Vistes Y Te Vas"

This South American Spanish rock band have drawn comparisons to The New Pornographers and Weezer, but I think they've got a few more things in common with (the now defunct rock band) Zudrok. They make catchy indie-rock...hear samples from eMusic or visit their Official Site.

7. The Blood Arm - "Can I Unwind" (Mp3 courtesy of band's website)

The Blood Arm are an L.A. underground garage rock flavored quartet, they are not to be missed when they come through your town. Hear more from The Blood Arm's MySpace.

8. El Perro del Mar - "God Knows" (Get the Mp3 from El Perro del Mar MySpace)

El Perro del Mar is from Gothenburg, Sweden. She released a split vinyl single with Jens Lekman a few years back...it has since sold out. This track is from the EP entitled You Gotta Give To Get. On the 10th of April her self-titled album will finally be released in UK and Europe (in France on the 9th of May) on the British label Memphis Industries.

9. Vic Thrill - "Circus of Enlightenment"

Vic Thrill & The Saturn Missile are the definition of an underground band. Despite their allegiance to the sub-culture, they have been discovered by major promoters and publications with recent shows in Italy opening for Iggy & The Stooges, they opened for Devo at The Hammerstein Ballroom (NYC), The Amsterjam (NYC) w/Peaches, Snoop Dogg, Gogol Bordello, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more. The group's last record CE-5 (Circus Clone Records) was ranked Top Ten of 2003 by The Washington Post and received praise from many respected publications such as NME, which described it Like Bentley Rhythm Ace and The Boggs covering songs from Oh Brother Where Art Thou...clever catchy space-funk fusions of everything from Eastern European folk to world music rhythms...weird.

*From NPR - Vic recently signed a movie deal with Paramount Pictures and a book deal with Random House, telling the story of his life from 1998-2004 when he was living in an old gas station that served as band headquarters and a thrift shop version of the Warhol Factory, known as The Vic Thrill Salon. The book, due September 1st, is forecasted for release in the winter of 2006 and the movie sometime soon after. Producing the movie are Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn with Tina Fey (SNL, Mean Girls) writing the screenplay. The story is set around the Salon and focuses on Vic's friendship with a young Hasidic man who, under Vic's guidance, morphed into something of a cult hero on the Brooklyn underground music scene (this story aired years ago on This American Life). The film will feature much of the bands music and Vic himself will play a large role in the production as Co-Producer, Co-Music Supervisor and Executive Producer of the soundtrack album.

This track is from their album Circus Of Enlightenment...hear more from Vic Thrill's MySpace.

Mp3: "Late Night Sounds March Mix 2006"
(listen to past shows here)

Tracklisting:

1. Gotye - "Learnalilgivinandlovin" (Mp3 courtesy of Comfort Music)
This Australian artist is due to release his second album in January 2006. This song's got a rich Motown vibe, you can download more tracks from his MySpace.

2. Colder - "Wrong Baby"
This song is from Colder's (aka Marc Nguyen Tan) 2005 S/T album, which is full of new wave and electro pop...stream this track and a couple others from his Official Site or hear more from this fansite MySpace.

3. Happy End - "Kakurenbo" (Hide and Seek) (Get the Mp3 from this Happy End fansite MySpace)
You may remember this '70s band from their song ("Kaze Wo Atsumate") featured on the Lost in Translation Soundtrack. Here's their bio, in a nutshell...In 1970 the Japanese quartet, Happy End, began making rock music in Japanese at a time when most Japanese rock musicians sung in English. Influenced by Buffalo Springfield, the band began to interpret the music of the west coast rock, while singing the songs in Japanese. The band released their first self-titled album in 1970, their second album "Kaze Machi Roman" is hailed by fans and critics as a masterpiece of Japanese rock. By 1972 Happy End had called it quits. I found a link to this fansite MySpace, where you can download this song and a few others.

4. Owen - "I Woke Up Today"
You may recognize Chicago's Mike Kinsella from the handful of bands he's played with, including: Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, Owls, Maritime, or Aloha. Owen is his solo project, this track is taken from the Polyvinyl Summer/Fall 2005 Compilation.

5. Pilotdrift - "Passenger Seat"
I don't know much about this band, beyond the fact that they opened for Supergrass the last time they were in my town and that this song is incredibly infectious. Radiohead fans might dig this. For kicks, head over to their Official Site and figure out how to navigate your way around. Hear more songs from their MySpace.

6. The Research - "I Love You But..." (Get the Mp3 Courtesy of Marathon Packs)
The research make happy-go-lucky, Casio-friendly, elegantly crafted pop songs, don't belive me? Hear more from their MySpace.

7. Ciaran Flynn - "Stay the Night" (Get the Mp3 from Ciaran Flynn's MySpace)
Ciaran Flynn is a singer-songwriter from Dublin, Ireland and I don't know much else about him beyond the fact that I like this song alot.

8. Joselo - "Muerete" (Get the Mp3 from Joselo's MySpace)
You may know Joselo as a member of the world famous band Cafe Tacuba. This track is from his debut solo album Oso and it will linger in your head long after it's over.

9. Viva L'American Death Ray Music - "Push and Pull"
This is really great garage rock tune from a band that I believe is no longer together. You can hear snippets from eMusic or hear a track from this MySpace.
