About me:

*** Jóven del mes: Every month or so the Latino Initiative features the voice of one young person who is pursuing his or her goals and waiting to start a family. If you fit this description and would like to be featured, please send us a MySpace message telling us a little about yourself, or e-mail Liz Sabatiuk at lsabatiuk@thenc.org. You can also check out our blog to read about our past Jóvenes del mes! ***

The Latino Initiative was created by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy in response to high and increasing rates of teen pregnancy and childbirth in the Latino community. We work with teens, parents, school administrators, health practitioners, community and faith leaders, the media, and legislators to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families and, in particular, to help ensure that children are born to parents who are emotionally, psychologically, and economically prepared for the demanding task of raising the next generation.

NEW!!! Check out this clip from the MTV Tr3s show Yearbook Chronicles, which profiles Martha, a Latina teen mother who had to drop out of school to take care of her son. In this segment you’ll see many of the challenges and realities teen moms face as a result of getting pregnant at an early age.

El 19 de mayo, 2009, Univisión transmitió un reportaje en el que se abordaba el problema de las altas tasas de embarazos entre jóvenes en la comunidad latina.

Watch this interview with Dr. Maria E. Rosa, Vice President of the Institute of Hispanic Health of the National Council of La Raza, then watch the panel discussion she participated in on Teen Pregnancy in the Latino Community on May 19, 2009, in Washington, DC!

Happy with your relationship? Having a baby before you and your partner are really ready is one of the best ways to ruin it...TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Wait until you're both ready. Emotionally, psychologically, economically. Really.

Who I'd like to meet:

People who are proud of their heritage and excited about their future.
