About me: NATIONAL LATINO AIDS AWARENESS DAY - OCTOBER 15
October 15 is the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. and marks what has become an annual observance in our fight against AIDS. It is a day of hope for the future of a world without AIDS.
In recognition of the surging new infections among Latinos, different localities and leaders will use National Latino AIDS Awareness Day to promote and sponsor activities on prevention and education.
Others will use the day to make religious leaders and public officials aware of the needs in reducing new infections and caring for those living with the virus.
Our hope is that NLAAD will become a year-round active network that promotes collaboration and partnerships to help stem the tide of HIV/AIDS in our communities.
Each year, on June 27, the National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA), in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other national and local entities across the country organizes National HIV Testing Day. This unique initiative sends the message, “Take the Test, Take Control,” to those at risk from HIV from those already living with HIV.
NAPWA was one of the first AIDS organizations to advocate that people at risk of infection should seek out voluntary HIV counseling and testing. As people living with HIV/AIDS, NAPWA members and staff understand that knowledge of HIV status is essential to making informed decisions about their lives. NAPWA took this knowledge one-step further in 1995 by launching the National HIV Testing Day campaign.
National HIV Testing Day was developed in response to the growing number of HIV infections in communities of color and other heavily impacted communities. Today, CDC estimates approximately 250,000 Americans are living with HIV but unaware of their HIV status. NAPWA believes HIV testing is a critical first step in taking control and responsibility over one’s health.
TODAY is National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It is a national mobilization effort designed to encourage Caribbean-American and Caribbean-born individuals, across the United States and its territories, to get educated, get tested, get treated and get involved. It is also a time to reflect, memorialize and show compassion for those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. It is a day of hope for the future of a Caribbean and Caribbean American community with available preventive health care as a daily part of life and a Caribbean Diaspora free of AIDS. Today marks the 5th annual commemoration of National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day; May 19th.
What is National A&PI HIV/AIDS Awareness Day?
One of the key achievements of the Banyan Tree Project to date is the establishment of National A&PI HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on May 19th. This day is officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The first National Awareness Day was held in 2005. Each year, this day is commemorated with events around the country designed to promote the Banyan Tree Project goals.
In recognition of National API HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has created a National HIV/AIDS Observance Days Web site.
What happens on this day? Organizations around the country dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS services to A&PIs host events in their communities to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS-related stigma.
Are you planning on holding a May 19 event? If you are holding a May 19th event, we would like to list you on our event web page and add it to the map. Please download and fill out an event form (Word Document) and email to info@banyantreeproject.org or fax to (415) 292.3404.
What have we accomplished so far? On May 19th, 2005:
Hundreds of people attended events in nine cities across the country. Key leaders in the fight against HIVAIDS-related stigma were recognized with awards in cities holding awareness day events, including Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. A&PIs living with HIV/AIDS spoke publicly in Chicago about how stigma and discrimination have affected their lives. A media blitz of radio, television and print ads, as well as posters and signs, promoted HIV/AIDS awareness and addressed the issue of stigma in Honolulu’s “No Shame” campaign. An HIV/AIDS research summit was held in New York City. Dr. David Ho, who was honored as Time Magazine’s Man of the Year in 1996 for his breakthrough research on HIV/AIDS, was the ke
out about the disease. Zamora testified before the United States Congress to argue for more explicit HIV/AIDS educational programs aimed at youth of color before auditioning for The Real World in 1993.
Zamora’s appearance on The Real World brought his story and message to a national audience; and when his health began to deteriorate in late 1994 (after he left the show), his condition quickly became front page news nationwide. His death at age 22, following the final episode of “The Real World,” provoked a worldwide outpouring of grief.
"Our historic, simultaneous premiere of the film across multiple networks demonstrates the power of Pedro’s journey to reach a vast array of audiences, just as it did 15 years ago," said Brian Graden, President of Entertainment, MTV Networks Music Channels and President of Logo. "His story originally ignited a national dialogue, permanently impacted our consciousness around the challenges of HIV, and gave untold millions the courage to open up about their sexual orientation.
For those of us who remember him as a treasured television friend, and for a new generation coming to his story for the first time, we remain grateful for the gift of his story."
“Pedro made us promise to tell his story to his very last breath; this film delivers on that promise by telling his entire life story in a scripted film - including his early life in Cuba, his teen years in Miami and the final months of his life as he fought to stay alive,” said BMP Films President, Jon Murray. “For the first time viewers will see all the forces that made Pedro the man he was and gave him the courage to take his message of AIDS education to a nationwide audience.”
Nearly 15 years since Pedro heightened national awareness of HIV/AIDS, the epidemic in the U.S. remains a serious concern, especially among younger Americans (under 30) who account for a larger share of new infections than any other age group. Other sexually transmitted diseas
May 18 is National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD), a day to celebrate the thousands of volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working to find a safe and effective vaccine against HIV. Santa Monica, CA, March 4, 2009 – MTV, mtvU, LOGO and MTV Tr3s, with subtitles in Spanish, will present the world television premiere of Pedro, a movie based on the remarkable life of The Real World’s Pedro Zamora, on Wednesday, April 1 at 8:00pm ET/PT. BMP Films, in association with MTV, produced this biopic written by Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”).
In 1994, Zamora captured the hearts of millions as the first-ever openly gay, HIV-positive main character on TV, on MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco. Zamora’s time in the house on Lombard Street brought a face to the AIDS crisis. President Bill Clinton has long credited Zamora with personalizing and humanizing the epidemic, and he will introduce Pedro when it makes its world television premiere April 1st.
“To this day, Pedro Zamora remains an extraordinary example of what a huge impact one young person can make in our world,” President Clinton said. “I’m glad to have known him, and I’m grateful his life has been able to inspire and enrich so many others.”
Told through the eyes of his friends and family, the film Pedro celebrates the extraordinary life a young man who found out he was HIV positive at 17, then made the courageous decision to dedicate his life to speakin
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is celebrated on March 10, 2009. NWGHAAD is a nationwide initiative coordinated by the Office on Women’s Health (http://4women. gov/NWGHAAD/about/) to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. It serves as an opportunity for organizations across the country to come together to provide support, encourage discussion, and educate women and girls about prevention, the importance of getting tested, and how to lead a normal, healthy life despite being infected.
Why celebrate NWGHAAD? HIV/AIDS among women and girls is not just an international problem —it affects women right here in the United States. In addition, the number of U.S. women and girls living with HIV is on the rise. In the mid 1980s, less than 15 percent of new HIV infections in the United States were among women and girls ages 13 years and older; by 2006, it was about 27 percent. By holding NWGHAAD events and helping OWH celebrate the initiative, we can bring attention to the impact of this disease and encourage women to get tested regularly and know their status.
We can also let women know that despite being infected, they can live life to the fullest.
How can I celebrate NWGHAAD? There are a variety of ways to celebrate NWGHAAD. Hold a screening event or health fair, work with your local government official to issue a proclamation declaring March 10 National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in your community, or work with local media to create awareness and cultivate stories about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.
Hii I know this is a lot to read but.. I just wanted to tell you that the National Day of Silence in on April 25 his year. I don’t know if you’re interested in participating but it is a silent protest against the discrimination faced as a result of sexual orientation and gender identity. It would be amazing if you participated as well as your friends ((so let them know =])). The only thing that you have to do is not talk all day. It’s a very passive way to get the point across. To inform people why you are not talking w/o actually talking print/ cut this out and pin it to your shirt: “Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies in schools. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you going to do to end the silence?" If you have anymore questions you can message me , go to my other site www. myspace. com/alerttheworld, or http://www. dayofsilence. org . Thanks for reading this && I hope you consider participating in it, Olivia

Hi, Thanks for the add, I am a French politician who lives with HIV/AIDS. I was the first French politician – and also the only one so far – to acknowledge publicly my seropositivity, which was discovered in 1987. In France, I am the chairman of a society with 13.000 French politicians of all parties (ELCS, soon on myspace). I support UNITAID. One of our fight is to obtain that USA change their acts/laws which forbid people living with HIV/AIDS to enter in your country. I know all you do against AIDS and we need you for this important fight against discriminations. I have just created my "myspace" to promote this international fight and I need you to mobilise in USA! Best wishes. Jean-Luc Romero
