| About Louis Atlas |
|
Louis Atlas plays music that incorporates pop structures while preserving the essence of traditional roots rock reggae.
It’s a curious choice for a middle class white man from New York City and one that he openly recognizes. Louis certainly tried on a few music genres before finding his voice as a reggae artist.
He studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music but eventually dropped out to perform on Broadway and in clubs as a rock musician. He even studied acting at the HB Studio and the Neighborhood Playhouse before an auspicious Jamaican beach epiphany back-dropped by Bob Marley’s “Easy Skankin” changed his life.
After returning to the States, Louis became totally absorbed with reggae. “When I returned home, I went to see as many reggae artists as I could and constantly listened to reggae radio shows on the air,” says Louis.
He soon began to experiment by mixing in reggae tunes with blues and rock standards during rehearsals and subsequent performances with his band. The tipping point arrived when his band was offered a guest spot on an AIDS benefit compilation. Louis decided that he would write his own song for the record and that it would be a reggae tune.
Through the process of writing and recording his first single Shadow at the legendary Power Station studio, Louis met his longtime collaborator, Christian Cassan (Julia Brown, Zen Tricksters, The Churchills, Martin Newell). He also formed a new band with guitarist Andy Bassford (Toots and the Maytals), Ronnie Murphy (Jimmy Cliff) on drums, Larry MacDonald (Gil Scott-Heron) on percussion, and keyboardist Daniel Mintseris (Marianne Faithfull).
Recording Shadow also jumpstarted the recording of his first album Beat Of My Heart (Zolivia) in 2002. Beat Of My Heart displays reverence for melody and song crafting. It also mixes reggae with a fusion of Brazilian, classical, jazz and world music.
The artist is now preparing his second release on Zolivia Records, Citizen of NYC, for Spring 2006.
