Laura Andel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she grew up. After living, studying, and performing in Argentina, she moved to Boston in 1993 to pursue studies in composition. Since then, she has focused mainly on composition for large ensembles and developing her own conducting as part of the compositional process. In 2000, Ms. Andel moved to New York City where she created the Laura Andel Orchestra, a large ensemble that features an unusual combination of instruments and unites musicians from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds that perform Andel's extended compositions.
Laura Andel has received several grants, commissions, and awards for her work from BMI Foundation, Jerome Foundation, Unesco-Aschberg, Rockefeller Foundation, American Music Center, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New York State Music Fund, Roulette Intermedium, The Kitchen, and the Senate for Culture of the City of Berlin. She has also been a composer fellow at several artist residencies such as Bellagio (Italy), Sacatar (Brazil), Valparaiso (Spain), and in the USA at Yaddo, MacDowell, Music Omi, Blue Mountain Center, and Ucross Foundation.
Currently, she leads the Laura Andel Orchestra in several formations. Among the most recent are the 14-piece SomnambulisT Orchestra, the 10-piece Electric Percussive Orchestra, and now a new 9-piece format of the Laura Andel Orchestra, which includes bandoneon, piano, Fender Rhodes, double bass, cornet, clarinets, viola, vibraphone, and Gamelan instruments. SomnambulisT, her first extended work, was released by Red Toucan Records in 2003. In::Tension:., her second extended work, was released by Rossbin Records in 2005. Doble Mano, the most recent extended work premiered in 2007, is in the process of being released.

Great to hear from you! I hope you are happily making some great music as always! Please show me some of your works next time we got the opportunity to meet so I can learn from you:-)
As to the festival attendance in Argentina, unfortunately, I probably won't be able to make it due to the duty I have in the school and, also, the limited travel funding. I do spirit up and try to attend most of events in US though---since it's always very fun to have the chance to interact with other musicians:-)
Again, it's great to hear from you! I wish you all the very best!
Dear Laura--Big hello from the Midwest! Just want to thank you for the add and let you know that you are not only one of the most innovative composers, but also the nicest/fun composer, that I ever encounter:))--Jen-Kuang
laura, - truly impressive music! i admire the large-ensemble format mixing composition & improvisation. i really look forward to hearing your work in concert.
¡Hola! Gracias por tu amable invitación. Recién estuve en NY en un festival muy interesante de música mexicana, organizado por el ICE ¿los conoces? en fin, supongo que nos veremos en Berlín. Un saludo desde México.
