' VIRGIL'S OIL/TUOMAS' REEL/JOSEPH' played here live with Damien O'Kane on guitar. First tune i wrote with tuomas logren after a discussion about C sharp being the bass note of the universe (you know fiddles have that weird frequency thing with their low C through a PA), and named it after our car, Virgil!! The second tune is by tuomas too, and the third tune i wrote for my cool as anything little bro Joe!
'CHILLY WINDS.' I sing this song here with The Shee, mixed with a tune called 'the Groupie' by Rachel Newton. I know this song as a traditional american song, and have heard lots of different arrangements and verses in Bluegrass and Oldtime styles. I thought it would be interesting to hear how the band would arrange it, and this is the outcome!I enjoy singing it with lovely vocals from Olivia and Rachel too!
'THE GREAT DIVIDE' is one of the songs I sing with Tuomas Logren (guitarist and vocalist) and is a rough copy we recorded whilst I was visiting him in Finland. We have written some instrumentals together, and hope to get them recorded in the not too distant future.
'ROCKY ROAD BLUES' is with John Dowling on banjo, Lucy Williams on bass, myself and Dan Norton on mandolin and me on vocals. A version we got from mike compton and john moore at sorefingers 2006
Influences
Mainly the influence of living in the middle of nowhere when i was growing up, and having a fiddle player mum and a banjo playing step-dad! Bluegrass mainly, but folk, blues, gypsy jazz, country, oldtime, and a huge influence from everyone I have met during my time on the folk degree in Newcastle, and at the festival club at celtic Connections, and LOTS of others! Alison Brown, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Andreas Olberg,Angelo Debarre,Bela Fleck, Bill Monroe,Bireli Lagrene, Blazin' fiddles,Blue Highway,Bluegrass etc, Bob dylan, Brian Sutton,Buffalo Smoke,Chris Newman, Chris Thile,Daily Planet,Dan Tyminski,Daroll Anger,David Grey, David Grier,David Grisman, Django Reinhardt,Dorado Schmitt, Eamon Coyne,Fiddlers Four,Foo Fighters, Frigg,Graham Eadie, Hot Club of Cowtown, Hot Rize, Gillian Welch,Incubus,James Taylor,Jimmie Hendrix, Jimmie Rodgers,J.J Cale, Joan Osborne, Jamiroquai,Jerry Douglass,John Hiatt,John Moore,Kula Shaker,Leon Hunt,Lollo Meier,Martin Simpson, Martin Taylor,Mat Flinner,Michelle Shocked,Memphis Minnie,Mike Marshall,Lucinda Williams, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Nickel Creek, Perfect Circle,Piggalle 44, Pshycograss, Rabbi John, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reel big fish, REM, Rhonda Vincent, Sam Bush,Sheryl Crow, Simon Mayor, Spin Doctors,Stephane Grapelli, Stochollo Rosenberg,Suzanne Vega, Tchavolo Schmitt,Tim O'Brien, Tom Brad and Alice,Tony Rice to start!
I've been playing the mandolin since i saw John Moore with bluegrass etc play in out local theatre when i was 14. Before that i was into my folky folk, so my influences are quite broad! LOVE bluegrass, folk, blues, gypsy jazz and swing.
'The Shee' www.myspace.com/theshee is an all-female folk band.We play a mixture of traditional scottish, irish and american material, and lots of our own compositions. Feel lucky to be a part of it!
Over the last year the finnish arts council has given me the opportunity to work with Tuomas Logren, a guitarist and dobro player who lives in Helsinki. We have a shared love of oldtime and bluegrass music, and mainly focus on writing our own instrumentals which take inspiration from traditional finnish, american and british music. He also introduced me to red wine.....very important obviously.
The Laura-Beth Salter Trio is a new band with Lucy Williams on Double Bass and James Dewdney on guitar an vocals. Our music is highly influenced by Bluegrass, Western Swing and old acoustic blues. We like to sing about beer, gin, coffee......all the important world issues.
Have recently depped for Frigg, ww.myspace.com/friggtheband on their US tour, including an appearance on The Prairie Home Companion and Womad 07, and also have been playing with Rollapenny a little with Katie Doherty and Andrew Cadie.
I have recently finished my degree in folk and traditional music at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, majoring in performance and compoisition.
My new record just came out this week on I-Tunes and CD Baby. I have included a video talking about the record, hope you enjoy it! Please leave us some feedback to let us know what you think! Thanks for your support.
