Laurence England's Interests
|
| General | Publishing my work, singing, football, Church history, writing, gardening...I also follow Arsenal FC, who have sold out wantonly by not only moving from Highbury, a perfectly good stadium, but naming their new stadium after a Far East Asian airline. Still, at least they're not owned by a Russian oil tycoon who probably uses 50 pound notes to wipe his kitchen work surfaces and then throws them in the bin. I expect that he not only drinks crude oil which flows from his kitchen taps, but bathes in it regularly and puts it in his tea. | | Music | The Smiths, Nick Drake, Belle and Sebastian, Beatles, The Rapture, Aretha, Marvin, Otis, Smokey and all the Motown greats. | | Movies | Anchorman, The Jerk, The Man with Two Brains, Dodgeball, Dumb and Dumber, Stir Crazy, Ferris Bueller, Caddyshack and of course, Trading Places, which is undoubtedly the finest movie made in the history of film, because it is funny, it has Dan Ackroyd in it, has a happy ending and cleverly highlights the harsh realities of the gross inequalities inherent in the global economic system. And Jamie Lee Curtis shows the world her incredible talents...both of them. | | Television | The news, documentaries, gardening programmes, comedy such as Blackadder, Little Britain, Spaced, football matches. | | Books | East of Eden, Catch-22, Graham Green's books, Hans Christien Anderson, Oscar Wilde. | | Heroes | St Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
St Clare of Assisi, pray for us. |

About me:
Welcome to my Myspace site...
I live in Brighton & Hove, a city brimming with life, colour, imagination and dreamers. Brighton is not a city, indeed neither is Hove, but when these relatively small provincial towns combine, apparently the amazing fusion produces a city, and yes, that city is Brighton & Hove.
After studying Politics at Liverpool University, I joined ATD Fourth World, a superb anti-poverty organisation in London, as a full-time volunteer, an experience that has shaped my outlook on life considerably. While there I decided I wanted to become a journalist, so I completed the NCTJ in Magazine Journalism in Brighton. If you lived in a beautiful city by the sea would you uproot yourself to live in London just to earn a fast buck in the field of journalism? Me neither! Instead I spent 3 years working for Lloyds TSB as a data entry assistant, which was obviously much more rewarding! Well, I had a great time and met great people.
Ah, but then as I am getting on, I decide I want to be a Primary School Teacher. What a great idea! Career! Respectable job with good pay! Rewarding vocation! A job that is not data entry! However, on moving to Southampton to do the PGCE it did not take long for a combination of personality flaws, mental exhaustion and the inability to perform as a credible presence in the classroom saw me winging my way back to Brighton in abject despair. I did however, make wonderful friends there.
This was July 2006. So, what now? Well, being unemployed in Brighton has its down sides. But, give a man time with a computer, a guitar, his parents garden, a gift for coming up with melodies and a love of creative writing and he can blossom into a writer, guitarist, singer, gardener and desk top publisher hero action figure. I am unemployed but I enjoy life to the full, running a writers circle in Brighton, working on a magazine at the Unemployed Centre, writing children's stories, singing and playing guitar, singing in a Gregorian Choir, doing some gardening, playing football for AFC Cosmos, assisting at Mass and helping the Justice and Peace Group of St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church with my great friend and sister Vanessa.
I am fortunate to have so many wonderful friends across the country and in the US, a loving and accepting family, all of whom make even the hard times joyful.
