About me:
My name is Lauren Spencer. I am 19 years old and am a sophomore at MSU, studying Social Relations and aspiring to be a civil rights attorney. I am currently running for the Michigan State University Board of Trustees with the Green Party and am asking for your votes. I am running on the following issues: 1) Stop the War! 2) Vote NO on the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) 3) Add Gender Identity and Expression to Michigan State's Anti-Discrimination 4)Continue providing same-sex domestic partnership benefits to MSU employees Here's a bit more about each issue: 1) The war needs to end now! Besides the obvious morality issues, it is costing students too much. As our economy declines and jobs are eliminated, tuition continues to rise. The United States has spent more than $300 billion on the war in Iraq. Michigan's share on that is more than $8 billion. With that amount of money, more than 410,000 4-year scholarships could have been provided to students at public universities. 2)Affirmative action in Michigan is under attack. The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) is a proposal to end affirmative action in Michigan. Diversity is important, particularly in a college setting, and especially at a public university such as Michigan State. Only 20% of MSU's students are racial minorities. We need to promote and create diversity, not eliminate programs that contribute to it. 3)Michigan State University has an anti-discrimination policy which addresses gender and sexual orientation, however it does not include gender identity and expression. Vote to protect transgendered students!! 4) Two years ago, Michigan voters unfortunately voted to pass proposal 2, which banned gay marriage in the state of Michigan. The authors of this Proposal promised that this would not affect domestic partnership benefits. However, those same authors are now suing Michigan State University because it has continued to provide domestic partnership benefits for their gay and lesbian employees. The Proposal 2 authors are now objecting to MSU's policy because they believe that because MSU receives public funding, they should not provide benefits for partners in relationships not recognized by law. Michigan State needs to stand firm in their policy and continue providing equal and just treatment for all of their employees.
