I grew up (but didn't grow up) in Madison, Wisconsin. I was a high school cheerleader and choir jock but went off the party deep-end at the University of Wisconsin (as one is wont to do in Madison).
Moving to Minneapolis in the mid-'80's, my girlfriends and I formed the band Zuzu's Petals. We sucked for three years or so (depending on who you ask), and got our act together around 1991 (vans, tours, recording contracts). I hooked up with musician Paul Westerberg and got the nesting urge in a major way.
After the band, I went from songwriting to prose writing. A house, parenthood, and an MFA in Creative Writing followed. When not parenting or writing, I teach Memoir in local schools as a resident writer through a non-profit arts organization.
I follow with odd obsession the Minnesota Twins and Timberwolves. I have a shopping problem, especially with sample sized beauty products and a few choice online shops when I have writer's block.
Laurie, thanks for the great read and for coming to talk. Ever get a chance to spin that Rhinestone Diplomats cd? It doubles as a great plant coaster too. Peace, Steve/RD's
Hi Laurie, Don't know you, didn't know yer band but now I do, you write good half-assed Pop Songs and front them well from what I've seen on MTVU-Tube.
Tell yer Hub he's fulla shit about movies, and You should write more songs...
Laurie, I hope your SxSW reading went well. Please post reviews and pics if possible (and if you have time:)) I wish I could have been there. BTW I can't wait to get the new comp CD. The song "Star Baby" is one of my faves and I haven't heard it in ages- since my record player died!
Your SXSW panel was great... thanks for signing my book! It was pretty cool seeing X with you- that's something I won't soon forget. Good luck with the new book! -Clare
Super sweet show at 7th street! What an amazing idea for a reading and the band was right on! Wish people didn't have to get their hair done at 8 a.m. so we could have stayed and heard about the rest of your life....Kudos to you lady, and thanks for the show!
Wow what a great reading and rock history show at the Entry. We had a great time. My wife read your book and after hearing your reading I will too. P.S. The band, including you were great. Peace
