I'm lucky to be playing with a talented group of funk and blues players: Al Udell on bass, Kevin Dunbar on drums, Clayton Pielak on harmonica, Jeff Norris lead guitar and Sophie Leger on backup vocals. Together, we are WAKE UP HAZEL.

Laurie Sarkadi thought the closest she'd ever come to playing in a band would be the hours spent as a child air-guitaring in her basement. Bogus as it was, it held a certain cachet that classical piano lessons did not afford. Then a few years back she bought a guitar, learned some chords and began writing and singing songs she didn't know were in her with a voice she didn't know she had.
Her music is a mix of folksy blues, alt-country and rock that mostly explore the wonderful complexities of being a woman. She's extremely grateful to all the Yellowknife musicians who have been part of these new and wonderful experiences, and in particular Wade and Marie, and D-Rock, who were so forgiving of mistakes.
Besides playing music, Laurie is a writer and broadcaster, frequently seen in the hallowed halls of CBC radio and television. In 2006, her non-fiction essay "The Bear Within" was featured in "Dropped Threads 3 - Beyond the Small Circle, " an anthology of women writers in Canada. She is a frequent contributor to Canadian Geographic magazine and a strident defender of Mother Nature.
She's sad Harper didn't lose his pants in the election. There's always next time.
