A famous rapper once asked if there was a Heaven for a Gangster. Lavoisier is the embodiment of the answer to that question. Up until a few years ago it was “Stolen cars, gun sales, crack deals and jail cells,” but since then, Lavoisier has changed lanes. “I guess you could say I had an epiphany,” he says with an almost mischievous laugh, of his new approach to rhymes and life. But what happens when a drug dealer slash rapper has a crisis of conscience? What is the product of a real thug who’s turned over a new leaf in the name of God? Its name is Lavoisier and his lyrics are not for the faint of heart.
A student of hip hop since a youngster, Lavoisier was first introduced to two turntables and a microphone at the impressionable age of six by his older brother, and so began his love affair with all things hip hop. His older brother, who was a serious and dedicated MC on the verge of a record deal would later be murdered in the streets of Brooklyn, NY when Lavoisier was twelve. Growing up displaced, losing a brother to gun violence and already having lost mother to a heart attack at age four, combined with the pain of having an absentee drug addict for a father, became too much to bear. At age fourteen, Lavoisier began penning his own lyrics as a way of getting attention and also expressing his frustration and anger at life and the hand it had dealt him. His art was imitating life around him, but slowly, his life began to imitate his art. Lavoisier began to live out the violent and rebellious lyrics that he was writing. The streets were calling his name. “I didn’t have a paternal image and thugs were the most powerful figures to me that I could touch, so that’s who I wanted to be; that’s who I wanted respect from,” says Lavoisier of his pursuit for an identity.
Following a conversation with a close friend while smoking weed and counting drug money in an abandoned building, Lavoisier began to pursue a relationship with God. “Jesus got me up outta them streets and healed all of those broken areas of my life, so that’s who I’m gonna do this music for,” he says. Lavoisier’s aggressive and sharp delivery and passion along with his demeanor, which is unmistakably street, hardly make you think of Sunday morning at your grandmother’s church. Of his subject matter Lavoisier says, “My content hasn’t changed all that much, but my perspective has changed tremendously.”
In addition to moving over 5000 units of his debut album, The Next Big Thing V. 2.0, Lavoisier recently released a video that is burning up the web entitled “Rap Terrorist Goes to School” that has over 100,000 views and is steadily climbing. In the video, Lavoisier addresses a group of junior high kids and schools them to the hypocrisy of today’s most prominent rappers and the harmful effects of living out their lyrics. When speaking about the video and the backlash that has ensued, Lavoisier doesn’t seem phased. “I’m built for this man; you don’t have to be a thug to have courage.” Spoken like a true RAP TERRORIST.
‘Many a church has fallen into a condition of indifference, and when it does so it generally becomes the haunt of worldly professors, a refuge for people who want an easy religion, which enables them to enjoy the pleasures of sin and the honours of piety at the same time; where things are free and easy, where you are not expected to do much, or give much, or pray much, or to be very religious; where the minister is not so precise as the old school divines, a more liberal people, of broad views, free-thinking and free-acting, where there is full tolerance for sin, and no demand for vital godliness. Such churches applaud cleverness in a preacher. As for his doctrine, that is of small consequence, and his love to Christ and zeal for souls is very secondary. He is a clever fellow, and can speak well, and that suffices. This style of things is all too common, yet we are expected to hold our tongue, for the people are very respectable. The Lord grant that we may be kept clear of such respectability!’
~Charles Spurgeon {from his sermon “An Earnest Warning about Lukewarmness”}
Psalm 75 1 Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare. 2 When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly. 3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah. 4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn: 5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. 6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. 8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them. 9 But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. 10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.
I know the proud flesh wants to serve Christ, by striking out new paths. Proud man has a desire to preach new doctrine, to set up a new Church; to be an original thinker, to judge, and consider, and do anything but obey. This is no service to Christ. He that would serve Christ must follow him; he must be content to tread only in the old footsteps, and go only where Christ has led the way. It is not for you and me to be originals; we must be humble copies of Christ. There must be nothing about our religion of our own inventing; it is for us to lay thought, and judgment, and opinion at the feet of Christ, and do what he bids us, simply because he gives the command.
John 6:27-37 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
