Lawndale Art Center's Blurbs |
About me:
Mission: Lawndale Art Center develops local contemporary artists and the audience for their art.
Purpose: Lawndale is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on work by Houston artists. Lawndale presents exhibitions, lectures and events, and offers an annual residency program to further the creative exchange of ideas among Houston’s diverse artistic, cultural and student communities.
History: Lawndale Art Center was founded in 1979 by artist James Surls in an abandoned 100,000 square foot warehouse as part of the University of Houston, providing studio spaces for graduate students in painting and sculpture. Surls, then Professor of Art, created an exhibition area within Lawndale’s15,000 square feet of space and the exhibitions there soon expanded to include shows by other artists in the community. Lawndale Art Center became independent and received its own non-profit status in 1989, and since 1993 has been located in a 1930’s Art Deco building located in Houston’s Museum District. In 2005, Lawndale completed a $1.2 million renovation of the building; a complete upgrade that meets City Code with full ADA compliance. Lawndale is committed to the site’s historical preservation and its presence in the Midtown area has facilitated revitalization in the diverse community it serves. The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance recognized the renovation of the building with a 2006 Good Brick Award.
From the beginning, all programming has been artist driven. Lawndale is governed by a Board of Directors representing the Houston community. One-third are artists or arts professionals. The Lawndale Programming Committee serves as a curatorial voice for Lawndale and meets twice annually to review proposals for exhibitions. Lawndale encourages exhibition proposals from artists and curators whose work is site-specific, traditional, non-traditional, experimental or collaborative. Exhibitions, special events and benefits are carried out with the invaluable assistance of volunteers, interns, work-study personnel and in-kind contributors.
Lawndale has four museum-quality galleries and three artist studios that facilitate its role as a vital cultural resource for Houston. Over 500 artists have their work presented at Lawndale annually. Along with individual and group shows, Lawndale hosts two open-call exhibitions every year, one juried by a nationally recognized curator.
Lawndale’s most recent programming initiative was to launch an Artist Studio Program that provides studio space for three local emerging artists. Lawndale also programs a variety of educational events throughout the year including performances, lectures, symposia and film screenings.
Lawndale also offers an internship program that gives individuals the opportunity to participate in almost every aspect of gallery operations alongside the Administrative Director, Exhibitions and Programming Director and the Executive Director.
Applications are accepted 3 times a year for Fall, Spring, and Summer.
