Influences
Rollins mixes Latin and Middle Eastern musical influences with his Spanish-inflected guitar style. In his solo albums "Infinita" and "Espirito" Rollins and an eclectic ensemble of renowned musicians meld salsa, Latin jazz, bossa nova, and rumba rhythms with Persian, Arabic, and Indian music styles.
When guitarist Lawson Rollins arrived on the World Music scene, he astonished listeners with his electrifying guitar style and expansive musical vision. His genre-defying sound combined the passionate rhythms of salsa and samba, the free-flowing improvisations of Latin jazz, the deep bass tones of the blues, the gentle lilt of the Bossa Nova, the fiery attack of flamenco, and the soaring melodic flight of classical music.
After releasing 4 critically-acclaimed albums as part of the duo Young & Rollins, Lawson released his debut solo album, INFINITA, in 2008, which lived up to its name with a far-reaching series of groundbreaking soundscapes. All About Jazz called the album "a rewarding gem...easily one of the year's best." Read the story of the album here. The guitarist was praised for his compositional skill and soulful virtuosity. Guitar Player Magazine wrote, "Rollins seduces in so many ways that it's almost unfair. His classical tone is gorgeous, his technique is impeccable, his subtle genre blending is compelling."
ESPIRITO, Rollins' second solo effort (scheduled for release January 19, 2010), is a suite that extends and expands the vision of INFINITA with thirteen compositions that delve deeply into the roots of World Music. Read about the making of ESPIRITO and listen to exclusive pre-release song samples here. The album features an eclectic, all-star ensemble of musicians, singers, and producers from the Middle East, South America, Europe and the United States, including the legendary Brazilian singer Flora Purim, percussion superstar Airto Moreira, and Iranian kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor, as well as Persian-American producer and musician Shahin Shahida of the Billboard chart-topping group Shahin & Sepehr, multi-platinum-selling producer Dominic Camardella, and Grammy winners Charlie Bisharat on violin and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on drums .
