Blues Jam Finale
Women's Jazz Organ Summit; Trudy Pitts, Gloria Coleman, Linda Dachtyl
"Trouble"-Linda Dachtyl Quartet, from the Women in Jazz Organ Summit, 4/25/09
Influences
The late great Maynard Ferguson opened my ears to jazz.
My tastes in music have always been eclectic and I have learned equally from the Ivory Tower of Academia and the garage.
My jazz B3 influences are mostly "old school" and in no particular order are : Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Charles Earland, Hank Marr, Trudy Pitts, Tony Monaco, Gene Ludwig, Gloria Coleman and the list continues to grow.
Over the years, I had the privilege to study with some of the finest teachers in Columbus or anywhere, for that matter. I met all these fine teachers when I was a student at Capital University or Ohio State:
B3 and piano with late great Hank Marr.
Piano, composition, and arranging with local Columbus legend, the late Dave
Wheeler.
Piano with the late John Ulrich.
I still study from time to time with some of the finest jazz educators around including:
National B3 artists Tony Monaco (http://www.b3monaco.com ) and Gene Ludwig (http://www.geneludwig.com).
I spend lots of time jamming with and learning from saxophone great, Gene Walker (http://www.genewalker.com ).
My major rock keyboard influences are Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Jon Lord, Lee Michaels, and Goldy McJohn.
On my drumming I draw most of my influence from from Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Louie Bellson, Bill Bruford, and John Bonham.
I have studied percussion with Bob Breithaupt, Dr. James L. Moore, and Jim Curlis.
While I was a student at Capital University, I had the privilege to get to know legendary drummer Cozy Cole while he was working on getting his jazz degree and was an artist in residence. Imagine sitting in a class with jazz history taking a class in jazz history! I was happy to have known such a kind, giving person early on in my studies. Cozy shared with me that he always wanted the piece of paper, but never had the time to do it until he retired from the road. I fondly remember us practing classical marimba duets together and he'd give me tips on my drumset playing.
The music of Yes from all eras, John Coltrane, Claude Debussy, and Igor Stravinsky are also strong influences on my music.
Sounds Like
Linda Dachtyl/LDB3-Burning, bluesy classic 60's soul jazz for starters.
The Walt James Band-late 60's-early 70's psychedelic progressive hard rock in spirit
"I KEEP BRAGGIN ALL ABOUT YOU TO ANYONE WHO PLAYS "KEYS:" and YOU ARE THE ONLY CDs except for JIMMY SMITH and McGRIFF in my TRUCK ~!! CANT GET ENUFF "
Goldy McJohn, organist of the classic Steppenwolf band
"Put this spin on the "Hep" cycle and let it rotate, for it has the matchless signature that cleverly dispenses the art of cool rhythms. Linda Dachtyl and her jazz organ have orchestrated a tidy, little career of being one thing…unique! The style has this old-school fervor to its music sheets.".....
... "Dachtyl extracts such elegance and smooth cool from her keys, the arrangements offer imaginative flair and are blurred from textbook regulations. For Hep Cats takes the blues mentality and injects the jazz feel properly with a charismatic approach."
..."Dachtyl takes control on this spin and attaches a very pleasant and at times, naughty feel to it."
Karl Stober EJazznews.com
"In fact, we (Columbus, OH) may be the B3 capital of the world thanks to legendary figures like Don Patterson and Hank Marr—and to the B3 jockeys now playing at home and away, like Tony Monaco, Bobby Floyd and Linda Dachtyl... who counts Monaco and Marr among her major influences. Dachtyl began getting national attention with her release Blue Bop, but she can still be heard at area clubs like the Thirsty Ear and Dick’s Den."
Lee Brown, The Other Paper, July 31, 2008.
"Linda Dachtyl strikes appropriately blue moods on "For Hep Cats" (Chicken Coup Records), a fine album of smoky organ jazz recorded with Robert Kraut (guitar) and Gene Walker (tenor sax).
She kicks the pedals to push the jaunty "Tone Wheel Grease"; "Trouble" swings irrepressibly; Jimmy McGriff's "Turn Blue" is slow moving dynamite.
Three superior vocals round out the proceedings;
Lady Nikki Scott's "Since I Fell For You" narrowly edges Larry Smith's "Little Red Rooster" and Columbus, Ohio singer Jazzmary on Nina Simone's "Do I Move You?"
Dachtyl has good chops and feel, and she adjusts her tones carefully to evoke elegance or grease as required.
There is no sound more beautiful than a Hammond organ played well." Tom Hyslop, Blues Revue Magazine, June/July 2008
"Linda takes us past the benches of those jazz organists who have influenced her through the years as well as those who have rocked her soul and put blues in her heart. Her sound is refreshing yet ‘old school’. It can be silky one moment and ferocious the next. One thing for sure, she gets right down to the nitty gritty from the first note on."
Pete Fallico, KCSM San Mateo & KUSP Santa Cruz, www.doodlinlounge.com
"The “LD” in LDB3 stands for Linda Dachtyl who continues
the burnin’ B3 Columbus traditions set by Hank Marr, Don
Patterson, and Tony Monaco."
"Linda is superb in every department, on every track. Her solos soar, her unison playing is tight, her supporting fills like Baby Bear’s porridge – not too hot, not too cold, but just right!"
Fritz the Night Owl, WJZA.com
"LDB3 featuring Dachtyl, shows how comfortably the bluesy Hammond organ can coexist with contemporary jazz. On “Sudden Samba,” the keyboardist goes from silky accompaniment to grinding solos that blend elements of blues, R&B, and gospel."

Welcome to my page.
I keep myself busy leading my own jazz groups LDB3 (B3) and QED (piano).
I am a member of the blues/R&B group Soul Satyr (B3/keys), Honk, Wail, and Moan, an eclectic jazz group that draws much influence from the music of Sun Ra (B3/keys), The Larry Smith Band (keyboards/percussion), and am the pianist for the Johnny Mack Big Band in Dayton, Ohio.
I am also active as a freelancer in the jazz/blues/rock circles including gigs with The Benny Goodman Orchestra, The Harry James Orchestra, Gene Walker, Sean Carney, Willie Pooch, Teeny Tucker, and The Walt James Band.
I can sub in in a pinch. Someone bagged on you at the last minute for a gig or studio session? Give me a CD to listen to and don't cancel the date.
