LD Harkrader's Interests
|
| Heroes | Nancy Drew. I started reading—no, make that devouring—Nancy Drew books in the third grade, when my mom, who had read Nancy when she was a girl, gave me The Hidden Staircase and The Bungalow Mystery for Christmas. This was in the 70s, when girls were still being told they couldn’t do all the things boys could do, and here was Nancy, proving them all wrong. Nancy could do anything, and do it better than anyone else. If Nancy took an art class, she was the most talented artist in the room. If she went skiing, she was the best skiier on the slopes. If she took up karate, she’d soon be able to whip up on anybody, including the instructor. (She wouldn’t, of course. Nancy knew violence never solved anything. But the skill was there. She could use it if she had to. She wouldn’t. But she could.) And of course she was the best at solving mysteries, certainly better than the River Heights Police Department, staffed by grown men. Honestly, I am a writer today in large part because of Nancy. Reading Nancy Drew books instilled in me a conviction that I could do anything I set out to do. |

Airball: My Life in Briefs Roaring Brook Press ISBN: 1596430605
Kirby Nickel goes out for basketball for one reason: a chance to meet the NBA superstar he’s sure is his father. But when Coach buys Stealth Uniforms (think “The Emperor’s New Clothes”) to improve the no-talent seventh-grade team, Kirby finds himself playing basketball in his underwear. And just like that, Kirby’s once-in-a-lifetime chance turns into a full-court mess.
“This fresh, first-person novel will have readers laughing at times, feeling Kirby’s pain at others, and moved at the end. . . Harkrader offers an amusing, wholly affectionate portrayal of a small-town community’s devotion to basketball and of a klutzy kid’s success on the court in spite of himself.” —Booklist
“Moving as fluidly as a basketball superstar in action, this big-hearted first novel is set in a Kansas town renowned as the home of Brett McGrew, now a famous NBA player. . . Even non-basketball fans will savor the on-court action and will cheer loudly for these determined players, especially endearingly ingenuous Kirby.” —Publishers Weekly
“Universal appeal. . . particularly for middle school readers who will see themselves in Kirby and his friends.” —VOYA
“The story has charm.” —Kirkus Reviews
“This book is hilarious!” —YA Books Central
“Airball is perfection.” —Midwest Book Review
