The 32nd Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards were held at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel in the Hawai‘i Ballrooms Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
NA HOKU HANOHANO AWARDS Pali hits high notes
The group wins three Hokus at the Hawaii music industry's leading awards event By John Berger "More for less" turned out to be the key to success last night as Pali T.W. Ka'aihue and his namesake group, Pali, won a pace-setting three Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for their work on their economically priced double CD "...with Aloha," as the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts announced the winners in 26 categories in the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton-Waikiki. "...With Aloha" won Album of the Year and Island Music Album of the Year. Ka'aihue also won Song of the Year, a composer's award, for "Island Days," one of the songs on the album. Natalie Ai Kamauu won Female Vocalist of the Year for "'I." Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole won Male Vocalist of the Year and Hawaiian Language Performance for "Kaumakaiwa." "'ikena," the album by Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho that won 2009 Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album in February and Contemporary Hawaiian Album at the Hawaii Music Awards in March, was barred from the Hoku ballot after Ho's distributor missed the filing deadline. The decision by the HARA Board of Governors to strictly enforce the filing deadlines this year also eliminated Ho's 2009 Grammy Award-finalist compilation album, "The Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar" and kumu hula Kawaikapuokalani Hewett's "Honehone i ka Poli." This year's other three Grammy finalists all won a Hoku. "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Master Series Vol. II," produced by Milton and Chris Lau, won Compilation Album, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom won Contemporary Album for "'Aumakua" and Ledward Kaapana and Mike Kaawa won Favorite Entertainer of the Year -- the only Hoku award currently determined by public vote. (Voting in three other categories is limited to "Regular" members of HARA; recipients in the two Hawaiian language categories are determined by a panel of specialists in Hawaiian song writing.) Compilation Album was one of several awards that was announced before the start of the televised coverage. Lau described the win as "a great honor," adding, "We love what we do and we're passionate about it. To get an award is icing on the cake." The winner in the Liner Notes category was also announced before the start of the televised awards show. Puakea Nogelmeier spoke for his co-winners, Keali'i Reichel and Fred Krauss, in reminding the audience that thorough annotation of Hawaiian music continues to be important "as we move into the digital age." "We can't leave liner notes and the written foundation and the information about the music behind. It's important to encourage the industry to keep that right hand in hand."

Here are some updates from da Man. (and Robyn) posted to our Current Events page on the website. www.dannycouchfanaddicts.com ~ Enjoy KITV Broadcasted Statehood Special featuring Danny's These Islands! Paula Akana Hosted Historic 90-Minute Feature on Aug. 7th POSTED: 12:42 pm HST June 22, 2009 UPDATED: 4:42 pm HST July 7, 2009 HONOLULU -- KITV broadcasted a 90-minute TV special on Aug. 7 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hawaii's statehood. KITV's own Paula Akana brought you through time in this trip along the past five decades of Hawaii history. Danny asked "did you watch chanel 6 .. On the last 50 years of statehood? (I wasn't home from traveling to do so unfortunately) These Islands was the song they used as the BEST SONG in the last 50 years!" "Also look or ask for the new Times Super Market add on TV thats me on there!" I bet he was beaming with pride. Danny also asked me to check out Channel 2 news and see when Ron Mizotoni has that Statehood special on there, they will be using These Islands for that show. Check out the website at http://www.khon2.com/content/himoments/default.aspx Hawaii Moments in History Hawaii's own, Ron Mizutani takes the people of Hawaii on a year long journey, that began August 21st 2008, commemorating Hawaii's 50th anniversary of Statehood. Throughout the year Ron will continue to recognize and salute institutions and individuals both past and present who have made an impact on Hawaii. This special is to celebrate to the rich heritage of our State and our local communities, as well as cover important native Hawaiian issues. Join us Wednesdays to celebrate the "Moments In History" that have made our state the unique place it is today. Danny is participating in a COMMERCIAL FOR TIMES SUPER MARKET: Robyn wrote (being one of the first to view the TV add); "I just saw a commercial on TV for Times Supermarket, with Danny congratulating the chain for their 60th anniversary. They have his name plastered across the screen and then he picks up a bottle of Champagne and sings "Tiny bubbles in the wine" then congratulates them for 60 years. They have him standing in one of their stores, in the liquor section and there is a photo of his latest CD on the bottom left of the screen. COOL!!!" Danny informed us of this the other day and was awaiting word on it's release.. Robyn was one of the first ones to view this on TV. For those in Hawaii WATCH FOR THIS AD! In the mean time we'll see about getting it to others as well via sources extraordinaire. Mahalo Robyn.. Hugs Stay tuned more more good news coming soon. ***

ABOUT ME... I cherish every day, I adore Hawaiian Music and working on my website for Danny Couch DANNY COUCH FANADDICTS FAN APPRECIATION WEBSITE Hawaii has become a vested interest and true passion.. I've visited several times a year for the last 19 years. Hawaii Pai Ki I To Photograph
I enjoy working on and restoring/showing 1955 to 1966 Ford Thunderbirds (Tbirds)The ultimate tanning machine!TBIRD CLUB I have won several awards in national and international/worldwide shows through CTCI (Classic Thunderbirds Club International). Our latest award winning bird is the Original Peacock Blue with peacock blue interior, white porthole hardtop '56 in the photos. (a true labor of love)
I enjoy photography and although have won awards with my photos will not shove them down your throat, I believe my photos can always be improved on, having first used Antique cameras to learn the fundamentals of photography I have shot mostly with Canon 35mm Film cameras I have moved in recent years from Sony digitals to my Professional Nikon D70 Digital Most recently I have moved up to my Nikon D300 without reservation, and have welcomed the results.
Nikon Through The Viewfinder I have mixed feelings about digital photography altho made easy to use, I believe you lose the true touch with your project, the technical aspect. I also enjoy boating the Puget Sound and British Columbia region in the Canadian Gulf and San Juan Islands and the solitude of Desolation Sound, Princess Louisa Inlet. Sailing is also a passion although power gets you there faster. Seattle and the Great Northwest Photography
My dislikes: I believe whole-heartedly in honesty and truth, being married to a Naval Academy Graduate (Honor Concept) as well as an Ordained Minister that's what guidelines I follow. I'm an easy person to get along with unless you yank my chain, Badmouth or spread untruths about me or those I love. Your choice...You can be my best friend or my worst enemy very simply put. Like any Pit Bull I'll fight for what I believe in, and my bite is much more vicious than my bark in true German style. (UNFORTUNATELY, I've been forced to learn to stand up for my beliefs in the last few years, I think that's called assertiveness training)
I believe in family and friends, and anyone who attacks that foundation, or them, or the memory of, will not be allowed in my life! I'm a stubborn German and my motto is similar to John Paul Jones' when he said "Don't give up the ship" I only set out to repair the damage once it's been inflicted on my loved ones.
My Pet Peeves are: I detest being hounded/stalked and having my private business invaded as well as those I care about, people have personal lives and are entitled to their privacy! Rumors and untruths destroy relationships, and they always hit back home! Don't approach me expecting me to put you on a pedestal when you hurt others. One aspect of growing up is learning right from wrong and I truly believe as an educator, that not enough of that is being taught the "I Generation". I believe in the true spirit of Aloha and follow it's guidelines. I practice what I preach, I don't just write about it! I do absolutely detest those who don't follow or live by the true meaning and use it for commercial purposes only.
A stands for Akahai, kindness, to be expressed with tenderness. Meaning welcome, what I have you may share with me.
L stands for Lokahi unity, to be expressed with harmony. Hawaiian words 'loko maikai', which means, what I've said comes from my heart and with good intentions.
O stands for Olu€™olu, truthful honesty, to be expressed with pleasantness. Hawaiian word 'oluolu', meaning happy. This is part of the heritage of happy people happily doing for others.
H stands for Ha€™aha€™a, Humility, to be expressed with Modesty. Hawaiian word 'ha..aha'a', meaning humility and meekness. I welcome you, I do things for you because I enjoy doing it, and I am very humble to serve. The enjoyment of others is the motivating factor, not praise.
A stands for ahonui, patient perseverance. Hawaiian words 'a-a ka maka', which means, our eyes are wide open but our lips are sealed. If you have taken all from us, who is to say, for we knew what they were doing.
Be honest, truthful, patient, kind to all life forms, and most of all humble in your accomplishments.
