I sing lead and harmony vocals and play lead/rhythm guitar (with MIDI aka "guitar-synth").
Influences
Albert Lee, Larry Carlton, 'The Three Kings', Vince Gill, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jerry Donahue, John Jorgenson, Allan Holdsworth, Stevie Wonder plus many others! I'm privileged to have known my real hero: the late and way-beyond-great Pete Jacobsen.
• International demonstrator for Vox amps and guitars. • Guitar Institute teacher and examiner. International Guitar Foundation (IGF) tutor. • Featured instructor on a wide range of Lick Library DVDs and streaming videos. • Book author.
I've played thousands of gigs, including tours with Number 1 pop act, Odyssey and a jam with Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove. I've been a professional guitarist since 1979. I'm mainly known as a country picker although I actually play many different styles including blues, jazz-funk and fusion, often featuring MIDI-guitar (piano, strings etc.). I also sing lead & harmony vocals. I've been playing on the British country scene since 1987, having appeared with Memphis Roots at Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall plus countless clubs, festivals etc. I continue to play UK country festivals with the Steve Cherelle Band. I'm currently gigging on a regular basis with a rock'n'roll/60s band, Benny & The Jetts.
I've been a magazine columnist and transcriber for Guitar Techniques since 1994 and I've written occasional articles for Guitarist magazine, too. I authored a tutorial, 'Hot Country', plus I've written chapters for 'Guitar: a Complete Guide For The Player' and 'Play Acoustic'. In the education sector I've written courses for Diploma and Degree level, plus two grade pieces (Grade 1 & Grade 5), which are validated by Trinity College of Music.
Teaching-wise, I joined London's Guitar Institute teaching faculty in 1990 – the school is now part of The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP). I'm a long-standing tutor for the International Guitar Foundation (IGF). I've also made several DVD tutorials for Lick Library, and one project that I'm particularly proud of is acting as host and playing alongside one of my heroes, Albert Lee. I now have my own "channel" at licklibrary.com.
Recording wise, I've done many sessions, including hundreds for GT, as produced by Phil Hilborne.
