  • Bio

Hi, welcome, and thanks for checking out myspace! I am a singer/songwriter guitarist/instructor/producer. My influences are mostly Rock, Southern Rock, Country, Blues, and Bluegrass. I like other styles also. I write for me, other Artists, and Film/TV. I attend many songwriter events, and I'm back and forth to Nashville to co-write, hang with friends, and meet with publishers. Some recent news: "High Heels", a Female Pop/Country pitch, co-written with Kathy Ashworth, of Nashville, TN, won first place in Durango Song Expo "Write with a Hit Maker" Song Contest, Country Category Feb 2010. FUN! Thanks Kathy! See www.leejohnsonsongs.com for many more songs! Another song recently landed in the TV show "Animal Planet" co-written with friend Dean Taylor...thanks Dean! The song called "Fragile" was placed, using just the instrumental track I played and produced here in my home studio! I am fortunate to be making a living as a singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer, and have been FT guitar instructor for over 15 yrs! I chart out a lot of songs....see www.boulderguitar.com. I have been busy gigging locally and nationally for over 23 years now as well as session work, and have a Protools based home studio. I played in tons of bands over the years, some of my own, some as guitarist for hire. Perhaps most notably I toured nationally as singer/songwriter, and teletwanging/steel guitarist with Bluegrass/Rock act "Runaway Truck Ramp" from 1998-2003. We made 2 CDs and played festivals, bars, and theatres to loyal festivarian crowds. See Rolling Stone Mag Sept 1999 issue of "Top 100 bands that make up the soul of Saturday night". No Glam....Read: I've slept in parking lots from Seattle, WA to Sarasota, FL. LOL Currently, I focus 110% on the craft of songwriting. Writing, recording, producing, pitching etc...I keep a modest gig schedule, both solo singer/songwriter and with a FUN cover band. I am a member of ASCAP, NSAI (Co-Coordinator N. Colorado), TAXI, CMT, SongU, and more....my priority is to focus on writing and presenting the best songs I can. Take a listen, and enjoy! See my main site www.boulderguitar.com...and www.leejohnsonsongs.com for a more complete song catelogue, as well as www.taxi.com/leejohnson, www.songu.com/members/leejohnson, and my cover band info at www.denverpartyband.com and www.coloradoweddingband.com. Drop me a line...Cheers!

For songwriting my main influences Country, Southern Rock, Americana, and Bluegrass. I love the blend of Bluesy Country/Rock. As far as my musical influences I also love to play and listen to Western Swing, Zydeco, Reggae, Caribbean, Jazz, Bossa Nova, and Big Band Swing etc. I also like the music in my head... I have a long list of influences so artists are listed in general categories. Bluegrass/Western Swing: Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, Del Mcoury, Peter Rowan, Jerry Douglas (I bought his dobro books) Sally Van Meter (took dobro lessons from Sally) Tim Obrien and Hot Rize, Sam Bush, John Cowan (I opened for him at Gold Hill Inn in Colorado, what a thrill), New Grass Revival, (really got me tuned into the bluegrass world) Tony Rice (my "Eric Clapton" of bluegrass guitar), etc... Bob Wills, etc... Country: Old and New Jimmy Rogers, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, George Strait...etc...Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley (another guitar hero as well as amazing songwriter etc) Toby Keith, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts. too many more artists to list...I LOVE THE STORIES IN COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!! My songwriting style I shoot for is geared toward compelling stories that have great hooks and emotional payoff. Rock and Blues: Eric Clapton (a big influence on my guitar playing, I love how Clapton just sqeezes every drop out of every note, I have learned so many of his songs and licks), Neil Young, (huge Neil Young fan since I was 15) CSNY, Steven Stills, Paul Mcartney, John Lennon, Beatles, (I really grew up with the Beatles and Bob Dylan) Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits (another guitarist that had a huge influence on my playing), Bonnie Raitt (a huge influence on my slide playing), Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers (Dickey Betts style taught me the use of blue notes in major pentatonic scale)Santana (I can tell it's him in 3 notes or less, and I spent years learning his licks), Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rolling Stones, Billie Joel, The Band, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Jackson Brown, The Boss, U2, Chuck Berry, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie, Mississippi John Hurt, etc... Zydeco/Cajun/New Orleans: Professor Longhair, Chubby Carrier, Roy Carrier, Dr. John, Little Feat, Lowell George, The Meters, Neville Brothers, etc... Folk/Songwriters: Woodie and Arlo Gutherie, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, John Prine, Steve Earl, David Gray, etc...too many more to list Jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman, Stan Getz/Giberto, John McLaughlan, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, etc... I've learned a lot of cool guitar lines listening to horn parts... Newer Rock: Jack Johnson (I love the mellow grooves), Coldplay (I like these songs and this new sound), John Mayer(he writes catchy tunes, but this guy can really play!) Alt Country/ Americana: Sun Volt, Wilco, Gillian Welch, Uncle Tupelo, Whiskey Town, Ryan Adams, etc... Reggae/Caribbean: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, David Lindley, Getz/Gilberto etc... I'll do more later...I know I'm forgetting a ton right now. I really can't comment enough on how much of an influence some of these folks are and have been, "like my fathers before me, I will work the land..."
  • Sounds Like

A mixture of Southern Rock, Country, Blues and Bluegrass. You may notice influences from some or all the artists and writers listed above. I try to write each song the best it can be written. To me each song has a heart of its own, and my job is to help the listener feel it's beat, and see the "video" that goes with it.
