"A pianist who resists categorization, Lee Sloan’s playing reflects an astonishing diversity of influences and command of styles that flow in a torrent of ideas and emotional intensity. The result is a juxtaposition of stark contrasts, where bold lines are continuously interspersed with searching reflection."
Born in the United States into a musical family, Lee was introduced to the piano by his father at the age of four, and began private lessons the following year.
He made his first public appearances at Carnegie Recital Hall and The Brooklyn Academy, before entering The Manhattan School of Music at the age of thirteen.
Lee went on to major in piano performance at Berklee College, Boston, and continued his studies with Josef Raiff at The Juilliard School, and with Grace Castagnetta, a pupil of the renowned concert artist, Josef Hofmann.
While living in New York, Lee could be heard performing in many of the city’s most well-known jazz venues, gaining notoriety as the house pianist at ‘Sweet Basil’s’ in Greenwich Village, at ‘Hanratty’s’, alongside Warren Vache at ‘Bechet’s’ and above the din of ‘Rick’s Café’.
Concerts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art brought him to the attention of Lila Acheson Wallace, the Reader’s Digest founder and art patron, who arranged for him to give his first series of improvised solo piano performances.
Following his success in New York, Lee took up residence in London, and became a fixture of the city’s jazz scene, appearing regularly in ensemble with Peter Ind at ‘The Bass Clef’, and as a soloist at ‘Pizza on the Park’, ‘Zanzibar’, ‘Café Pelican’, and ‘The 606 Club’.
He was also a sought-after session player in London studios and worked as a composer and arranger in partnership with lyricist Michael Hazlewood. Most notably on a musical theatre version of Mervin Peake’s novel ‘Mr. Pye’, that was subsequently filmed for BBC television.
His previous CD releases include 'Resurrectin’ Fats and Friends', a tribute to the masters of the fiendishly-difficult style of Stride piano playing: Fats Waller, Art Tatum, James P. Johnson and Willie 'the Lion' Smith, 'Highwire', a live concert recording of solo piano improvisation, and 'Bodily Fluid', a further ground-breaking recording of improvisations.
He has lived and worked as a soloist and in jazz ensembles in Great Britain, France, Germany, and Eastern Europe, performing with many of Europe’s finest musicians.
Lee joined together with saxophonist Mikolaj Trzaska, bassist Mark Tokar and drummer Rick Hollander to record their live performance of free improvisation during the Krakow Autumn Jazz festival in Alchemia in October of 2008.
Lee continues to win accolades as a pianist, composer and arranger, and has established himself as one of the leading exponents of the art of solo piano improvisation.

Hey lee! You are a genious! Your improvisational stuff is just astonishing! Jazz is my most preferred style of music going to jazz gigs weekly with my dad, you should get in touch with a guy called Nick Hislam (he has a myspace) he runs the jazz scene in leicester, and something he loves to do is have Solo jazz piano sessions at the Richard Attenborough centre. Jazz musicians love it as its a nice chance for them to just play whatever they want and not have to worry about a band :) I am a huge fan of Ollie already, lots of my friends have heard his stuff! You have a very talented family!
Hi Lee, great music. So did you defect to the East? It must be very cool to be able to make such music as a solo performer without needing to organise a band! All the best. Pete
Thanks for the message, hopefully see you at another one. I really like your son's music, hopefully catch him at a gig in the near future. Cameron James
