LEFT-HAND: As in "Left-Hand Path." The Left-Hand Path entails any personal philosophy or spiritual practice whose highest aim is either literal or symbolic self-deification. This is in direct contrast to "Right-Hand Path" religions, which require followers to throw aside their individuality in favor of submission to, or submersion in, an imaginary godhead, heaven, etc. (For the origin of the term, see: Vamachara. ASH: A genus of trees. In Germanic mythology, Yggdrassil (the World Tree) is generally thought of as an ash. The Hávamál tells of the high god Wuotan's self-sacrifice to himself by hanging upon the Tree with a spear thrust through his side. This self-torture was a form of shamanic initiation, through which Wuotan grew in wisdom and insight. Interestingly, the modern English title of "ash" can be traced to the Old English æsc, a word used to refer to spears made of ash wood.
