Annamoly's Interests
|
| General | Hmmmm...mostly I'm interested in humanity. Humans are really interesting. Sometimes we're self centered, self induldgent, self agrandizing SELFists. Sometimes we are increadibly generous and make huge sacrafices for one another. And most of the time we're kind of in between. We build temples to one another and to our gods and to our egos and we build shelters for our families (bound by blood or by gravitational pull or by something far more mystical) and we create tools and hazards and safeguards and drinks with funny names and we dance and we make music with our bodies and with our tools and we tell stories of what has been and what hasn't and what may be, and, I think the most daring, what is.
And we seem to spend a lot of time seeking unity and inclusion, which, if you are a die hard romantic, as I often proclaim myself to be, you seek as a side dish to your individuality. So far I've come closest to what I would accept as unity with other humans through shared emotion. Feeling scared together is probably the most common, feeling love for one another, also. So far, shared wonder is my favourite, followed closely by shared joy. Anyway, I believe that it's our quest for unity that gives apeal to lists of interests. Those you share with a person unite you, while those that you don't share reinforce your individuality. I don't put much trust in this; I indulge in it never the less.
Here is a friendly list of interests with which you can determine the depths of our unity for yourself:
theatre, dance, music, the way different things smell more strongly at different times of day or in different weather, electoral reform, chairs, feminism, masculanism, masks, surrealism, labour reform, vector diagrams of just about anything, glitter, tastes, sentimentality as invented and marketed by Hallmark, short stories, novels, documentary films, textiles, static art, people's relationships with their cell phones, collage, food
There are other things that I'm interested in, but I'm tired of writing this list, and I wouldn't be all that suprised if you've had enough, too. | | Music | I love my friends' bands. I also like a lot of other stuff. I carry ear plugs on my key chain because you never know when you'll have the opportunity to listen to a kick-ass live band and they tend to be too loud for me. Some day I want to play gamalan...and cello...and guitar...and bassoon..... | | Movies | Silents, Jaques Tate, musicals, surreal stuff, and documentaries. | | Television | Mostly a Weedonite. I also like Grey's Anatomy, House, Weeds, both of Showtime's queer dramas... oh, and my roommate got me hooked on Project Runway. | | Books | I dig books that manage to be simultaniously elegant in style and easy to read.
I have a venomous loathing for mawkish machismo (I can't read more than a page of Jack London, Steinbech's fiction makes me want to hurl...the book...across the room [I like his non-fiction a lot, though], and I had to scrape a C in Bursary English because I refused to read Wuthering Hights).
My favourite book for the last couple of years has been The Golden Gate by Vikram Seth. It's a novel composed of a series of sonnets. It's very pretty, but it doesn't make my brain hurt.
I've recently finished: The English Patient
I'm currently reading: Wonder Woman, The Astonishing X-Men, Promethia 5, Lolita, Reading Lolita in Tehran (started the former after starting the latter and realizing that I was missing a lot of allusions), On the Road, a book on bipolarity that my roommate's loaning me, Engineering Design Communication | | Heroes | I like the super kind: Dare Devil, Kitty Pride, Iron Man (when he's on the wagon), the Inhumans, Promethia, V, and, recently, Wonder Woman. That last one is kind of weird for me because on many levels I'm kind of anti-DC. Still getting my brain around them publishing something with decent dialogue. |

Well, here in LA there always seems to be the umpteenth production of some show that was hugely controversial twenty years ago.
If you're doing something that's honnestly creative, then I want in! If you have a vision to make the twenty year old pi

Scenic Painting: I like to paint things. I can sponge a pretty mean rock, stencil you a brick wall, cut in a clean edge...but if you want a sunset or a realalistic tree, that's a bit beyond me. I'd love to work as part of a painting crew with an expe

About me:
Living kind of an odd lifestyle during my childhood (sailed across the Pacific on a small boat with my parents) has turned me into kind of an odd adult. I aparently alternate between very litteral and very abstract comunication; I find it impossible to differenciate between the two. That which is litteral tends to be an abstraction that has become denotative; that which is classified as abstract is also an abstraction but one that is as of yet uncodified. Sometimes I think that this makes what I call abstract truer than what I call literal. Sometimes I don't. Now would be a good time to mention that I'm rather mercurial. I like to think of myself as ethical. Currently my ethics are something that I don't manage to live up to, but that doesn't mean that I'll stop trying. I'm really tired of living in Los Angeles. I'm from here, but I'm not sure that I want to be. I'd kind of like to be from Whangarei or Venice or La Paz; a friendlier place. I'm kind of shy and very silly. I deem that sufficient.
