In 2007, American society finds itself at a precarious crossroads. As a nation that encourages material and economic growth, we have been experiencing a technological boom. Technological advancements have allowed us to acquire goods and information, faster and cheaper. We can download music, and circumvent a trip to the record store. When we want to search for information, we no longer have to visit a library and engage in a tedious search through its archives. Instead, we can just “google it.”
The seduction of having so much information at our fingertips almost instantaneously may seem alluring. However, there is a dangerous dark side. The new advances of the digital/computer world has strengthened the already powerful influence of the media. The billion dollar media industry bolstered by huge conglomerates is becoming more pervasive in our everyday lives.
Most of us don’t leave our homes without our “portable media centers.” Cellphones,
I-pods, laptops and other like-items that were once considered luxuries, are now personal effects that we feel naked without.
These possessions have the capability of placing all forms of media in our palms. Convenient? Yes. Mind controlling? Probably. Brain-washing? Most likely. Poet and musician Jim Morrison stated, “Whoever controls the media, controls the minds.” I concur.
Considering that the most popular and wide-reaching media outlets are controlled by huge corporations, the question we must all ponder is: “What exactly is the media feeding our minds, and why?”
It is safe to say that the media and their corporate sponsors’ main agenda is to increase advertising revenue and viewership. In the pursuit of these goals, it would be obvious why the intellectual growth and mental stability of their viewers is not high on the list of the media’s concerns. Think about this: A highly educated mass of viewers would be unlikely to watch large doses of tv. They would also be likely to invest their money in things other than what the tv & radio sponsors are attempting to peddle to the American public. The media “powers that be” would find such a well-informed group a threat to their profits. Therefore, the media is used as a dumbing down tool that has an addictive quality. (Note: According to “TV-Free America,” the average American watches 4 hours of tv a day).
Sadly, we must also consider that despite us having more radio & tv stations than ever before in history, this has not lead to a diverse broadcasting of perspectives. In fact, just the opposite is happening. The media is tragically killing the visibility of various points of view. For example: When was the last time you heard a Public Enemy song played on the radio? Or, when was the last time you saw a network tv show (besides Oprah, and Gil Noble) that made you change your life, or someone else’s life for the better?
The media, which has the potential to be a positive educational tool, is instead veering down the path of purveying shallow ideas and ideals. The rapid degeneration of positive and diverse programming was one of the catalysts for the creation of this newsletter. This seasonal newsletter will express the views that aren’t necessarily given the attention they deserve in the mass media. This newsletter also seeks to open up a dialogue with the community.
