POTOMAC, Md. (WUSA) -- Magruder kicker Gabriel Leal hit a 24-yard field goal on his first career attempt to beat Churchill 10-7. Leal had played soccer for years before joining the Colonels' football team this season. The win over Churchill marked the second straight year Magruder defeated Churchill to improve to 3-4. Last season, the win propelled the Colonels to a four-game winning streak and a playoff berth. For Churchill, the game was a drastic contrast to the previous four games. During their four-game winning streak, Churchill averaged 35 points per game. On Friday, they scored only seven. Both teams played a scoreless first half with Churchill having just one real chance at the end zone. Churchill opened the third quarter with a 10-play, 66-yard drive culminating in a 7-yard touchdown run by junior Ryan Quinn making the score 7-0 in favor of Churchill. The score would stay the same into the fourth quarter. With 9:10 left in the game, Magruder's quarterback James Lazas threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Karim Jones to tie the game. On The Colonels winning drive, they started on their own 38-yard line. Eight plays later, Leal hit the game winner. Magruder will look to make it two in a row when they host Wootton. Churchill will look to rebound from the loss when they visit Whitman.
