About Leigh James

A self-taught musician, stunned at 12 years by the poetry of the song Vincent by Don McLean, Leigh knew that somehow someday he would also sing and write songs. Gaining experience on the streets and cafe's of Australia's cities, Leigh James continued to study by listening to more pop/folk like James Taylor, and earning dues playing Oz pub rock, covers and originals in an assortment of lineups in the early 80's joining a ‘World Music’ band ‘Funjungle’ with friends in Cairns, North Queensland.

Sydney was the destination by 1992, but the lure of Byron Bay on the north coast was stronger(!) and Leigh soon found musical companions especially Jo Jo Smith and Greg Lyon of Hip Pocket, a funky soulful north coast band that produced an album in 94: Get Loved.

Leigh married his partner (musical and familial!) Elizabeth Lord in 1996 and they have two beautiful children to that union, Lara and Jesse to add to Elizabeth's son Ryleigh and Leigh's daughter Jasmine, and they also 'birthed' an original album Share, in 1997.

Four Dolphin Awards to his credit, for Funk, Pop, Gospel, and Country, Leigh James has supported/backed Shane Howard, Graeme Connors, Kate Ceberano, The Black Sorrows, James Morrison, Renee Geyer, Marcia Hines and Brian Cadd to name a few!

Since 2006, Leigh has pooled live arrangements of the best of James Taylor's live concerts for the last 20 years(!) and produced a Tribute to James Taylor and featuring a gorgeous 8 piece band: Alan Park: Keyboards; Greg Lyon : Bass; Scott Hills: Drums and Matt Hanley: Electric Guitar, John Hoffman: Trumpet, Martha Baartz: Sax, Elizabeth Lord & Leigh Carriage: BVs

Leigh had the honour of recording a track for a tribute album to South African singer-songwriter Johnny Clegg. The track is called Cruel Crazy Beautiful World and the tribute album The Power Of One: The Songs Of Johnny Clegg, featuring tracks by Joan Baez and the Soweto Gospel Choir, Jimmy Buffet and the Australian band, the Beautiful Girls, and is available on iTunes here:
