1996: Depois de um período trabalhando como cantora convidada da banda que Paulo Moura mantinha, Leila Maria é contratada pelo selo GPA para gravar um CD. Vom Kopf Bis Fuss (Da Cabeça aos Pés) sai no ano seguinte e, bem recebido por público e crítica, apresenta a cantora e também compositora com seu estilo único embalado por arranjos ousados, como o de Get Out of Town (Cole Porter), criado por ela mesma e sustentando letras e melodias sofisticadas como em Algumas Imagens da Paixão, uma de suas sete canções neste álbum.
Leila sempre teve o respeito e o carinho dos músicos com que trabalhou, muitos deles, nomes consagrados de nossa música. Um deles é Ed Motta, cantor, multi- instrumentista, compositor e produtor que a convidou para dividir com ele uma das faixas de seu CD Dwitza (Universal) e a temporada de shows para lançá-lo no Rio, em 2002. Na época, Ed disse em entrevistas que, para ele, Leila “é uma das maiores cantoras vivas do Mundo”.
Seu trabalho em casas tradicionais como Mistura Fina e Modern Sound no Rio, e Bourbon Street e Tom Jazz em São Paulo, acabou chamando a atenção do grande produtor José Milton e em 2003 entram em estúdio para gravar o primoroso CD Off Key (Rob Digital), lançado no ano seguinte.
O CD reúne algumas das mais belas canções brasileiras que, na voz de cantores como Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn e Frank Sinatra, correram o mundo em suas versões para o inglês. Leila recria com classe canções como Dindi e Desafinado num inglês impecável e um molho brasileiro que só uma carioca de Madureira poderia acrescentar. O resultado é um CD irrepreensível por tudo: cantora, músicos e repertório! Atualmente, Off Key está sendo distribuído na Europa pelo selo alemão ZYX Music.
O último álbum é resultado de uma parceria entre a cantora e o jornalista e crítico musical Antonio Carlos Miguel, a quem passamos a palavra:

Para o álbum Canções do Amor de Iguais (Deckdisc, 2007), o jornalista selecionou de Chico Buarque (Mar e Lua) a k.d. lang (Sexuality), passando por Billy Straihorn e Johnny Alf. A cantora mostra toda a sua competência, interpretando com segurança temas como Lush Life e Iusão à Toa e passeando, brejeira, em canções como Seu Tipo (Eduardo Dusek/L.C. Góes) e Um Certo Alguém (Lulu Santos/Ronaldo Bastos).
Leila Maria está agora reunindo repertório para um novo álbum. Ainda não sabemos quais são as canções, mas já sabemos que serão muito, muito bem cantadas! Aguardamos ansiosos, Leila!

1996: After a period working as an invited singer of the band that Paulo Moura was maintaining then, she signs with the label GPA to record an album. Vom Kopf Bis Fuss (From Head to Feet) is released in 1997 and, well received by public and critics, the CD introduces the singer and also composer with her unique style and daring arrangements, like in Get Out of Town (Cole Porter), created by herself and elaborated lyrics and sophisticated pop melodies like in Algumas Imagens da Paixão, one of the seven songs she wrote for this album.
The phonographic crisis that, in Brazil, led the great recording companies to sign with artists only for the quantity of sales, not for the quality of the productions, reduced the options for artists like Leila Maria. Still it wasn’t a problem for her and Leila kept on working in the axle Rio/São Paulo, up to securing her name as a great interpreter of the jazzy North American Standards and of the great Brazilian songs.
Leila always had the respect and the sympathy of the musicians with whom she worked, many of them, established names of our music. One of them is Ed Motta, singer, multi - instrumentalist, composer and producer who invited her to share with him one of the songs of his CD Dwitza (Universal), and the season of shows to release it in Rio, in 2002. Then, Ed said in interviews that, for him, Leila is “one of the biggest alive singers in the World”.
Leila's work at important venues as Mistura Fina and Modern Sound in Rio, and Bourbon Street and Tom Jazz in Sao Paulo, got the attention of the great producer José Milton and in 2003 they entered in studio to record the excellent album Off Key (Rob Digital), released in 2004.
The CD gathers some of the most beautiful Brazilian songs that, sung by singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Frank Sinatra, became famous in English versions.
