Leisure McCorkle began in 1997 as a musical project of Lee McCorkle. Formerly in Local/regional outfits Misguided Youth and Funkenstein, McCorkle fine tuned his songwriting skills on the side. In college at Appalachian State University with the band Big Boy and UNC-Chapel HIll, McCorkle started to play under the name Leisure McCorkle and put together a full time band in the summer of 1997 with Grainger Gilbert (Granger), Justin Faircloth (The Houstons), and the two Mikes (of Jolene). In the winter of 1997 they recorded their debut record "Nappy Superstar." Superstar was heralded by critics from LA to the UK. Over the next several years McCorkle released three more cd's (American Ghetto Pop Machine (1999), Beautiful (2000), and 2002's "Jet Set Baby." Jet Set Baby (MoRisen) solidified McCorkle's three minute musical treasures to the national and international public.
McCorkle has played over a thousand concerts in the ten years since the bands inception, playing with a whole host of other musical talents ranging from members of Cowboy Mouth to pop wonderkind Glenn Tilbrook of the band Squeeze all over North America and Europe. His songs were featured in MTV's first reality shows "The Real World" and "Road Rules" and he has toured supported numerous bands including SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, BLUE DOGS, COWBOY MOUTH, CRACKER, ELLIOTT SMITH, MARYZ EYEZ, JOLENE, THE SPONGETONES, EDWIN MCCAIN, HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH, THE LONSOEM TRAVELERS, SNATCHES OF PINK, WATERSHED, DILLON FENCE, HOBEX, SELAH, CITIZEN KING and numerous others.
In 2004 McCorkle moved from Charlotte, NC to Belfast, Northern Ireland to finish his Ph.D. in Cognitive Anthropology under the supervision of giants E. Thomas Lawson and Harvey Whitehouse. Now in 2007 Dr. McCorkle is working on his fifth and most poignant album to date. Leisure McCorkle plans to release his new work titled "5000 Light Years Beyond the Speed of Sound" in the fall/winter of 2007. Much of his new material is heavily influenced by his time in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Whether it is the stage at one of the many International Pop Overthrow festivals he has played or a vibrant night at some of America's most intimate venues, McCorkle delivers the goods both from a songwriting and entertainment perspective.
