I am a New York based musician/producer/composer. I moved to New York in 2005 from my home town of Madison, Wisconsin. I grew up in a very musical environment, surrounded by supportive people who encouraged me to pursue my creative interests. I started writing songs at an early age, and when I was in high school, The Steve Miller Band recorded a number of my songs. Many of them were released on their last studio album, Wide River (1993).
I attended the University of Wisconsin and got a history degree. In college, I also lived in Seville, Spain and began my ongoing love affair with Spain and Spanish-language music. During that period I recorded two solo CDs, Leo and the Depleting Moral Legacy (1997) and L.Sid (1999). In college, I recorded three albums as a drummer with my father, Ben. One of them, The Concert for Garcia Lorca, recorded live in Granada, Spain, was nominated for a Grammy.
After college, I continued to perform and produce music. I produced projects for the French singer Clementine, legendary jazz singer Mark Murphy, and original James Brown funky drummer Clyde Stubblefield.
In 2003 I released a bilingual album of children’s music called El Elefante with my father, which received a Parent’s Choice Award.
In 2000, I started working with singer/songwriter Joy Dragland and formed "Joy and the Boy". We released Paradise in 2001, and Soaking Wet in 2007. (We have a new EP which will be available soon - you can hear a few tracks on the joyandtheboy myspace page.)
In 2004 I started Nardis Music to feature and promote my productions (and productions with Ben). I released my third solo album, Bohemia that year. I co-produced two albums with Ana Laan for the label, the most recent of which, Chocolate and Roses was released this year. The album Introducing Moses Patrou, which I co-produced with Moses, was also released on Nardis last year.
In 2004 I co-produced "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" with Jorge Drexler. The song, written for the film The Motorcycle Diaries, received an Academy Award in 2005 for best original song from a motion picture.
I started writing music for television and film more actively in 2005 when I moved to New York. I work with Amber Music in New York for commercial music composition. Over 25 of my commercial compositions have appeared in campaigns for products like Coca-Cola, Dove, Sprite, Snapple, Olay, Capital One, Nationwide Insurance, and McDonalds. Additionally, I write music for documentaries and films. Two recent projects are "At The Death House Door", directed by Peter Gilbert and Steve James (of Hoop Dreams fame) and "Up With Me (The Harlem Movie Project)".
Finally, I continue to gig on guitar, keyboard and drums. As a drummer I have performed or recorded with such notable musicians as Phil Woods, Frank Morgan, Perico Sambeat, Bob Malach, Richie Cole, Phil Upchurch, Richard Davis, Steve Khan, Mike Maineiri, Dave Grusin, Ricky Peterson, Oscar Castro Neves, Howard Levy, Georgie Fame and Boz Scaggs.
Along with Wills Bates and James Rickman, I am one third of the band Fall On Your Sword.
