A long-overdue U.S. release from the best-kept secret of Seventies soul.
Seventies R&B smoothie Leroy Hutson has always been one degree away from stardom. He co-wrote The Ghetto" with his former Howard University roommate Donny Hathaway, replaced Curtis Mayfield in the Impressions and recorded several albums for Mayfield's Curtom label that lacked crossover hits but earned Hutson lasting respect, particularly in England.
Remarkably, this best-of collection is his first U.S. release on CD. His airy ballads and spirited midtempo grooves rarely deviate from stylistic paths laid by Hathaway, Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Listen for the subtle hooks in Hutson's arrangements: Tracks like 1978's "Closer to the Source" and 75's "Lucky Fellow" radiate joyous, jazzy vibes and a harmonic sophistication that will win over any fan of contemporary crooners like John Legend. Hutson himself is a neglected talent who never emerged from the shadow of his inspirations, but his music is never less then contagiously optimistic and blissfully content.

Soul singer Leroy Hutson replaced Curtis Mayfield in the Impressions in the early '70s, then went on to a solo career that saw the release of eight albums between 1973 and 1982, all but the last of them on Mayfield's Curtom Records label. Those records were modestly successful and, while out of print in the U.S., have seen reissued in the U.K. Shortly before his death in 1999, Mayfield gave Hutson the rights to his masters, and The Best of Leroy Hutson, Vol. 1 on Hutson's own Triumph label is the first result of that. Hutson scored a series of singles on the R&B charts, and compiler Rodger Clayton has not hewed to a selection of those singles or to chronological order, preferring instead to mix up a selection of singles and LP tracks. Still, "Where Did Love Go?," "All Because of You," "I Do -- I Do," "In the Mood," "When You Smile," and "Can't Stay Away" are five of 12 tracks Hutson placed in the Billboard R&B singles charts, and leadoff track "So in Love with You" (repeated in an extended version at the end) made the Cash Box R&B singles charts. Hutson closely followed the musical trends of his time, and listeners are liable to be struck by the similarity of some of his songs to the music of better-known R&B acts. Nevertheless, the album is a welcome introduction to what should be a series of reissues that will profit the original artist directly. William Ruhlmann
