Formed 9 years ago, LES BOUKAKES is made up of 7 guys : Bachir, the voice of the band. Then come Thierry, the Corsican guitarist, Haki from Kurdistan keyboard and accordion, Bubulle, bass player from the north, Imed, Tunisian derboukist, Pascal, drummer from the south and the Italian of the team, Massimo.
Their name itself is a reply to some of the less than friendly comments they received in their time on the streets, Boukake being a phonetic mixture of two typical racist insults. But for them, that did not have anything of degrading, because the Boukake was born during the long trip of exile, a rich child of the world and its prohibited loves. Without making ostensible political comments in their songs, this deliberate attitude says something for their resistance to bias and ignorance generally.
After a few years, from the street to bars, from small concerts to festivals, they finally met their audience, sharing the stages with famous bands like Manu Dibango, Cheb Mami, Taraf De Haïdouks, Cheikha Rimitti, Rachid Taha and others...
In 2001, they recorded the album "Makach Mouch'kil" (No Problem). That first work got a great reception from the media. The lyrics with oriental melodies harmoniously swing on musics either Rock, Groove, Electronic, Raï or Gnawa.
In 2004 their music (raï n'rock) was spotted: They won professional prizes (FAIR, Découvertes Printemps de Bourges..) and the European TV channel ARTE chose to follow their development for documentaries.
They celebrated the end of the year with the release of a brand new album Bledi.
The Raï and Rock Music of that album proves that the combination of Orient and Occident is possible and it can be Happy !
Years 2005-2007 were dedicated to the audience, so the band was on tour with more than 150 concerts in various countries - Notice their participation at the Womex 2005, Festival International of Jazz in Montréal, Paléo Festival, Sziget Festival, Amsterdam Roots, Sakifo Festival, Timitar Festival Morocco etc…
In 2007, they have been nominated for The BBC Awards For World music.
Now they just recorded the new album ''MARRA'' (co-produced by Philippe Eidel and Franck redlich).

Groupe métissé fondé il y a neuf ans, Les BOUKAKES, c'est d'abord 7 gars : Bachir, né en Algérie est la voix du groupe ; puis viennent Thierry, le guitariste corse, Haki du kurdistan au clavier et accordéon, Bubulle, bassiste du nord, Imed, derboukiste tunisien, Pascal, batteur du sud et le rital de l'équipe Massimo.
Leur nom c'est un limonadier en mal de poésie qui leur a inspiré. Qu'à cela ne tienne, la bande prouvera que "boukake" n'a rien d'insultant, qu'il est même l'expression d'un métissage réussi.
Après quelques années à affûter ses arguments, de rues en bistrots, de petites salles en grandes scènes, le groupe s'est affirmé et a rencontré un large public à l'affiche de nombreux festivals Français et Européens, au coté de Manu Dibango, Cheb Mami, Taraf De Haïdouks, Cheikha Rimitti, Rachid Taha, Jean Louis Aubert, Bernard Lavilliers, Zebda, Gnawa Diffusion…
En 2001, ils enregistrent l'album Makach Mouch'kil.
Et c'est en 2004 que leur musique se fait remarquer : Les Boukakes sont finalistes des Découvertes du PRINTEMPS de BOURGES 2004 ; ils sont également lauréats du très convoité Fair 2004. Sans compter que la chaîne européenne ARTE a choisi de suivre leur parcours pour une série de documentaires consacrés aux coulisses du Printemps de Bourges. L'année ne pouvait que bien se fêter, avec la sortie de leur nouvel album BLEDI (Mosaïc / Mimouna Prods). Le disque regorge de savants mélanges entre raï, rock, pop, musique gnawa, électro, arabo-andalou, reggae... Et prouve que le mariage de l'Orient et de l'Occident est possible ; il peut même être heureux !
2005-2007 fut consacré au public, avec une tournée de 150 concerts à travers une vingtaine de pays. A noter les participations au Womex 2005, au Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Paléo Festival, Sziget Festival, Amsterdam Roots, Sakifo Festival, Timitar Festival Maroc etc…
Les Boukakes ont été nominés, aux BBC Awards de Musiques du Monde 2007.
Ils viennent de terminer le Nouvel Album ''Marra'' (en collaboration avec Philippe Eidel et Franck Redilch).

Porté par une voix éraillée et fascinante, le résultat ne
ressemble a rien de connu, brassant poésie, rock, musiques
méditerranéennes traditionnelles et d'influences occitanes dans des
chansons mutantes à fort pouvoir évocateur.
VIBRATIONS
L'album Extatic Malancòni , manifeste poignant,
s'ouvre part un riff "stoogien" à la mandole et la tension ne retombe
jamais. Sans doute le chant de Karpienia y est-il pour beaucoup, si
dense qu'on encaisse physiquement le poids des textes rageurs.
MONDOMIX
Après quelques courts bruissements de mandole, dès les
premières minutes de cet album, la voix de Sam Karpienia est déjà au
zénith. Musicalement, les paysages dévoilés sont racés et cohérents ils
semblent vierges, ou offrent tout du moins une hybridation originale,
entre transe méditerranéenne, urgences rock et lyrisme occitan.
