Another human story...mine goes like this sometimes:
I was born in Santa Monica, CA on July 30, 1981. I played with blocks and balls for a while and then I got into piano and singing. Looooooved to sing, and not much has changed in that department. Piano was alright but after about five years I decided to play a "cool" instrument (these are my wise, older sister's words heavily influencing me at age 12). Thus began my love affair with the alto saxophone. I figured out how to play Amazing Grace on it and I was hooked. This new woodwind friend of mine, and my parents appreciation of music (e.g. Ella and Louis, Benny Goodman, Paul Simon, The Beatles, Bob Dylan...) helped tip me off into a hot and heavy romance with music. I listened and danced, joined every band and choir I could, competed in solo competitions in middle school and high school, and then shipped off north to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR.
In the moss and mist I got a BA in Music Composition with the help of a very dear mentor named Forrest Pierce. Then upon graduating, I decided to changed it all up and ran off to South Africa to help with the AIDS Crisis. I was pretty sure that that was it and I'd live there for the rest of my life. That was my thinking before I actually went there, and then after four months in the Limpopo Province, a few hours north of Johannesburg, I found myself extremely ready to come home. I moved back to Portland to join a wild, energetic mock-marching band called The March Fourth Marching Band and started performing and touring and writing music in a whole new way. It was such a thrill to perform in clubs and bars and festivals! To perform for people who were actually up and dancing! To write music for people besides my professors... you get the idea. So meanwhile, I got the notion to start taking singing lessons because people kept asking me to sing, even though I was always hired as a saxophonist. I started studying with a most magical woman with lots of flowing white hair named Barbara Skipworth. She taught me how to sing operatically. I told her I was sure I didn't want to learn opera, but she insisted that it was going to be a very helpful tool for any type of singing, and right she was! To me, opera singing is the place where Yoga and Bootcamp meet.
This opera doorway turned out to lead to all sorts of delicious trouble. Before I knew it, I was the female vocal diva for a bohemian/cabaret/klezmer band called Vagabond Opera, and five talented musician dudes and myself started touring the country and making up a lot of hilarious games to play in the van. I stayed in that band for three years and got to learn to play Balkan and Arabic music on the sax, and most of all I got to sing my favorite Edith Piaf song "Milord." That brings us to now.
Now I've got my second solo album of original music coming out this fall 2008... (Oops did I forget to mention that I put a first album out in 2006?!) The first solo album I made is called Undulating and it consists of mostly a capella layered vocal folk/pop songs. The music was performed a few times by a group called The Jellyfish Choir. This next album called The Pickle Jar is with a full band of crazy talented Portland musicians including Drew Shoals on drums, Jamie Stillway on guitar, Arthur Parker on bass, and Skip von Kuske ..o. I do hope you'll check out some of my music to see how it feels to your liver and fourth chakra. The music is available at CDBaby... just go to www.cdbaby.com/cd/kernochan or check out my website at www.maplesyrupmusic.com.
Blessings from the place where we are most lost and whole,
Lesley.
