About me:

Hi, welcome to my lesson section!

Below is a little bit of history on my musical life...
troy.jpg
GUITAR PHASE:

I have been playing guitar since I was 16. I first got interested in guitar, living in the country (Anna, IL) with nothing else to do but sit around and watch my older brother Todd play Eruption and various other 80's hair band favorites. In high school I was obsessed with Leo Kottke and other solo acoustic fingerstyle guitarists. From there my interests turned more towards blues and jam bands such as Phish and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. After seeing Phish play live I got interested in Jazz and Blues and simply improvising on guitar.

I got my Associate of Arts degree from Shawnee Community College in 1997. I studied music there with John Windings, a great musician/teacher, who was also an overall great person. It was also around then that I studied guitar privately with Andy Gurley. Andy was an amazing inspiration. He's now a studio guitarist in Nashville and turned me on to artists like Brent Mason and that style of "chicken pickin'" guitar.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance (jazz guitar) in the spring of 2000 from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where I studied with St. Louis guitarist Rick Haydon. Rick turned me on to tons and tons of great Jazz Guitarists especially Pat Martino and Joe Pass . After graduating SIUE I played with several different original projects around Southern Illinois and in 2002 played guitar for a summer on the Carnival Cruise Ship the Imagination. When I returned I wrote and recorded tunes with the Chicago Based Jazz Fusion Group, Spare Parts and in the summer of 2003 our album "Exit 54" hit the shelves.

DOBRO® PHASE:

troy_with_dobro.jpgIn the fall of 2003 I moved to South St. Louis City where I currently reside. I started playing the Dobro® or Resonator Guitar in January of 2007, and have been obsessed with it ever since! In March of 2008 I started www.LessonsWithTroy.com as sort of a Online Diary of what I'm learning that particular week. When I was starting out with Dobro® I bought nearly all the DVDs that were available, and loved them, but knew that they could be tweaked to helped the students learn more efficiantly. That's where I came up with the Numbers On the Neck idea, and also just simply slowing the whole teaching process down so that everyone can really dig in and understand what I'm doing.

In July of 2009 I quit my day job permantly and plan on recording as many lessons, jam tracks, and producing anything else that I can think of over the next few years. I just want to be able to make my living learning and teaching everything that I learn about this wonderful crazy instrument!

online_lesson_videos.jpg In fall of 2008 I also started another website called: www.OnlineLessonVideos.com. On this site I bring in all my other musician friends and collegues around the St. Louis area and record them teaching their particular instruments:
Violin Lessons, Irish Fiddle Lessons, Banjo Lessons, Mandolin Lessons, Guitar Lessons, Bass Lessons, Trumpet Lessons, Pedal Steel Lessons, Recording and Studio Lessons... and more to come hopefully!! Check it out if you get a chance!

Thanks for stopping by and supporting www.LessonsWithTroy.com! I love what I do, and being able to share it with the world!

God Bless! Take care and enjoy your visit!
