ONE BILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY

People such as Al-Hassan, a rice farmer in Ghana, who earns just US$215 per year. That's not nearly enough to pay for his family's food, clothing, medicines or schooling. It doesn't have to be like this. Al-Hassan could make a living if he could trade his rice for a decent price.

Trade could help Al-Hassan - and millions of others - to make a decent living. Unfortunately, rigged rules and double standards in international trade keeps millions trapped in poverty. That is why Oxfam International launched the Make Trade Fair campaign.

Together we seek to build the kind of movement that has brought an end to apartheid, banned the use of landmines, and made real progress in reducing third world debt. The ambition is great and the task is not easy but we believe if this campaign succeeds, the lives of poor communities could be transformed in a way never seen before.
