GeneralTheatre, plays, musical theatre, voice, anything truly funny, TV shows, movies, Scrabble, language, writing. I'm a great believer in using proper English. We have a language -- a great one, because it allows us to communicate clearly and creatively. The recent trend of replacing English words with symbols, numbers, abbreviations and non-words is detrimental to that communication. It's not clever. It doesn't make the writer cool or interesting. What it does is hurt our ability to understand each other. NIFTY LINKS Reader's Circle
MusicBroadway, Joe Jackson, Billy Joel, Manhattan Transfer, Janis Siegel, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Chaka Kahn, Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, Mavis Staples, Aretha, Temptations, Stylistics, American Idol (OK. I admit it. I'm hooked.)
MoviesAmong my favorites are: "Brazil," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "The Ritz," "Citizen Kane," "Cabaret," "Night of the Hunter," "The Inlaws" (the original, of course, with Alan Arkin and Peter Falk), "Singin' in the Rain," "Shakespeare in Love" and "After Hours."
TelevisionI miss "The Flip Wilson Show." Of course, I'm partial to my own show, HBO's "The Wire."

   Letters from Backstage's Blurbs
About me:
I'm Michael Kostroff, a professional television and stage actor, and the author of the book, "Letters from Backstage." It's a funny, honest, behind-the-scenes journal of my time on the road with two major Broadway tours -- "The Producers" and "Les Miserables." You can have a look at the book, along with reader reviews, at Amazon.com. It can also be found at most major bookstores. I hope you'll check it out. People seem to really be enjoying it. As for me, I'm most often recognized from my role on HBO's "The Wire" (I play the dark and unscrupulous gang lawyer, Maury Levy), and for my Arby's commercial (I'm the guy getting whistled at by construction workers). For those of you curious about my other television credits, you'll find them listed at a site called IMDB.com, where you can look up any tv or film actor. I travel several times a year, so if you have a book club, theatre company or school group that you think might be interested in scheduling a visit, master class or book signing, feel free to let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thanks for stopping by. Michael
Who I'd like to meet:
You! Drop me a line. I especially love to hear from theatre students, theatre fans and book lovers.

Michael - thanks again to you, cast and crew for the incredible performance of "The Producers" at Gateway Playhouse this past week. Your "Max" was outstanding!

We agree with The Sultan down below. We know I've told you this before, but your play on the character Levy was spot on. I just finished the fifth season (again)! "Yvette is making some brisket" - We did notice that :-)

Kostroff! (Can I call you Kostroff? After the workshop and "Letters..." I feel I know you now!)
Scott and I thoroughly enjoyed Thursday's audition workshop. So many terrific insights! I, for one, was also very entertained and that scores extra points from me.
You are right, I love your book; it is simply delightful. What a pleasure to take the journey with you!
Oh - and I share your complete and utter disdain of flourescent lighting. Just thought I'd throw that in.
I liked you when I first met you at the melodrama, and now I am a fan. Happy trails!

-Dolores

Brilliant performance in the last episode of THE WIRE.

The show was as close to me as family but I am so glad that David Simon ended the show with the best closure imaginable.

Your performance in the episode was outstanding. I loved the scenes especially with you and Deidre Lovejoy.

Much continued success and I think Levy is going to go down as one of the most unforgettable characters on a classic show.
Scott

That was brilliant.

Congratulations on your success. I love your portrayal on THE WIRE. How does it feel to be perhaps the biggest villain on a series full of morally conflicted characters?

Continue the good work and I can't wait to see what happens in the final episode. Your scene with Jamie Hector in episode 9 was outstanding.

YAYYY! I just saw you in Li'l Abner. You were fantastic! I really enjoyed the show. Funny connections too. It turns out my dad worked with you on a Rozerum commercial a while back. Hope to hear from you soon.

Michael, I have almost finished Letters from Backstage, and it's absolutely wonderful! I'm on my own mini-theater tour, having driven down to see 3 shows in San Diego. Just this morning I read your questions about the plastic bag for the ice cube container and the coffee pot in the kitchen, and I was just thinking the same thing yesterday! Last night, after How the Grinch Stole Christmas, an actor friend in the cast said he had covered all the TRACKS in the show, and I knew what he meant! Thanks for letting me in on what it's like to do a major National tour! I know I'll be seeing you a lot on stage in 2008!
Happy Holidays!

Michael, your DC audition seminar was absolutely fabulous. I got so much out of it. I think you should write another book, just on that subject, and make lots of money and go on The View. Seriously, you made me feel better about the business and my place in it and that's not always easy - thank you so much! Cheers!

i love the book, i got it as a gift, and cound not put it down, it is so funny. and as an ameture actor i understand a lot of the things which none of my freinds do, like no food place being open at midnight, and why actors love dinners.
