"A wonderful songwriter - he writes beautiful songs": (Nanci Griffith) “Inspired by Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon… adding his own contemporary polish and a subtle Irish twist… reinforces Merriman as a premier league songwriter..” (Hot Press 4 Star album review) Liam Merriman the Waterford based folk performer / songwriter recorded his third album “The Night Is Huge” in Nashville Tennessee in Sept 2009. Produced by Thomm Jutz, guitarist/ producer (Nanci Griffith Band), it blends his contempoary Irish folk style with top level Nashville musicianship. The result fits neatly into the tradition of classic folk/pop artists of the calibre of Christy Moore, Gordon Lightfoot, Richard Thompson and Paul Simon. It includes 12 of his own songs and his evocative guitar instrumental "Hopelands"... Liam's previous album "Words In Music" was released in May 2008 picking up airplay on RTE Radio 1, Lyric FM, Beat FM, C102, WLRFM and many local radio stations around Ireland. Ireland's leading music magazine "Hot Press" awarded that album an enthusiastic 4 star review... Merriman’s career in music started during the 1970’s and by 1985 he had clocked up more than a dozen TV appearances on RTE and BBC. His songs had been included on an RTE compilation album of emerging acts and he was signed by Polygram Records Ireland and saw his Greg Boland produced singles “What A Day“ and “The Love In Your Eyes” heavily air played on 2FM‘s playlist. At the time he was one of a handful of new artistes being mentored by the legendary team of Nicky and Roma Ryan. Timing is everything in this business and unfortunately this partnership faded when Enya’s career rapidly entered the orbit of international stardom after the release of her debut single Orinoco Flow. The Liam Merriman Band formed and took to the roads of Ireland during the latter part of the 80’s and into the 90’s playing venues around the country and boasting a line-up of top musicians including Mick Kinsella , Jimmy O’Brien-Moran, Dave Prim and Mog O’Grady. During the 90’s, with less work around for full bands, the group splintered into duos and continued playing gigs relying mainly on Merriman’s songs. At the same time the Carlow / Kilkenny based traditional Irish Folk group Sile na Gig, parted with their lead singer and invited Liam to “stand-in” for a few weeks. This incarnation lasted into the New Millennium having awoken a love for traditional Irish folk music that had been with Liam since growing up during the famous ballad boom of the 1960’s. Merriman’s next project during 2003/4 was to finally record an eclectic debut album of original songs. With producer Greg Boland he recorded 10 tracks in the remote Wrecker’s Cottage on the estuary where the Barrow, Nore and Suir rivers meet and head out for the sea. “Three Rivers” was the result and Liam and Greg gigged the album before going on to team up with Eoin O’Meahcair to form the traditional folk group Caladh. As a member of this group Liam began playing overseas more regularly blending a traditional and contemporary sound and recording one live album while on the road. The next chapter saw Liam Merriman linking up with a German guitarist he had worked with briefly with when he was on tour in Ireland with songwriter Tony McLoughlin. Thomm Jutz had since moved to Nashville and was working as guitarist with Mary Gautier, with whom he toured the world. Liam happened to hear the duo on John Creedon’s midday radio show and got in touch once again. The doors of Nashville swung open and before long Liam was on a plane heading for Music City and about to record with one of the finest studio bands in the world. “Words In Music”, his second album was born. It was released in May 2008 picking up airplay on RTE Radio 1, Lyric FM, Beat FM, C102, WLRFM and many other local radio stations around Ireland. Ireland's leading music magazine "Hot Press" awarded that album an enthusiastic 4 star review... Next came the third album “The Night Is Huge” as mentioned above, which garnered another 4 stars from Jackie Hayden at Hot Press. Liam was then invited to join Nanci Griffith and her band as support act on her 2010 Irish tour:- "a really positive experience all round - great company, songs, musicians, stagecraft, organisation, and, of course, the most legendary Road Manager in the business: Phil Kaufman, (yes, the same man who “acquired the remains of his deceased friend Gram Parsons and took them out to Joshua Tree for a suitable send-off) He’s a man who knows a thing or two about the business…a great time was had!" Merriman's single, "Don't Say Die", a foot-tapping country rock flavoured track, was released from the new album to coincide with the NG tour.... Following that, his original Irish song "Siobhan", recorded in Nashville with a host of top players who just loved the trad-Irish vibe on the two minute trad-feast went out to Radio na Gaeltachta in time for Seachtain na nGaeilge 2010. Two other singles went to radio in Ireland during the year: his catchy road song “The Driver” and the Cohen influenced title track “The Night Is Huge”. An accomplished interpreter of the repertoires of the great acoustic writers that would have influenced his work, Liam is in constant demand as a singer / guitarist with his own arrangements of work by Cohen, Dylan, Simon, Lightfoot, Taylor, Young, Donovan, to Irish folk and instrumental guitar pieces, “the quality stuff” as he terms it. Liam begins an Irish tour, with guitarist / producer Thomm Jutz in March 2011. It will feature a selection of songs from Liam’s three records and songs from Thomm’s new album: “Work”. Liam Merriman also hosts his own radio show: The Green Room, featuring contemporary and classic Irish repertoire, on WLRFM, broadcasting to Waterford City and County, and around the world on www.wlrfm.com....

Ireland's leading music magazine "Hot Press" gave it a terrific 4 star review.... Being a great believer in the power and therapeutic value of music, it is no surprise to find that Merriman has been involved in the emerging field of music in health for the last number of years working with Waterford Healing Arts Trust at Waterford Regional Hospital. He has trained with Musique et Sante in Paris and is currently engaged in a European training project supported by Music Network, Ireland, Musique et Sante, France, Royal Northern College of Music (UK) and the Musical Academy of Cracow, Poland. The project is funded by Leonardo da Vinci - Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Union. A team of musicians from Ireland, England, France and Poland will work in 4 European city hospitals over a period of 6 weeks to bring music into the health environment for patients, visitors and staff.... Liam was invited to join Nanci Griffith and her band as support act on her 2010 Irish tour:- "a really positive experience all round, I learned a lot - great company, songs, musicians, stagecraft, organisation, and, of course, the most legendary Road Manager in the business: Phil Kaufman, what an amazing experience... He is currently on a summer residency at Mt Wolseley Hotel, Spa and Leisure Centre, Co. Carlow. Liam also hosts his own radio show: The Secret Chord, on WLRFM, broadcasting to Waterford City and County, and around the world on www.wlrfm.com.... Liam averages about 100 finger-pickin' live gigs a year, as well as his weekly therapeutic music workshops. Where there's music, there's Merriman...
